Sophomore quarterback An- drew James completed 21-34 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns on the night — one to Brady Christianson and one to Tucker Salinas. James also ran for one touchdown in the third quarter. Hermiston’s running game got plenty of work in as well, as the team combined for 250 rushing yards on 35 carries — an average of 7.1 yards per carry — and one touchdown. The Bulldogs started their scor- ing barrage with 4:45 left in the STAFF PHOTO BY GARY L. WEST Hermiston junior running back Jonathan Hinkle looks for additional yardage on a run against Mountain View earlier this season. Hinkle rushed for nearly 100 yards last week on the road against Hood River Valley. The Bulldogs return to Kennison Field on Friday for a Homecoming 2016 game against Ridgeview. irst quarter when James connect- ed with Christianson from eight yards out for the early 6-0 lead. The only other score Hermiston developed in the irst half was a seven yard scamper by Peter Earl — his irst of the season — and bumped the halftime lead to 14-0 after James found Jerry Ramirez for the two-point conversion. In the second half, Hermis- ton’s offense took off as it con- tinually wore down the Eagles defense, scoring twice in each quarter. In the third quarter, James plunged into the end zone from two yards out for the touch- down for the 20-0 lead, and then with 48 seconds left John-Hen- ry Line punched it in from two yards out as well for the 28-0 Bulldog lead. Then in the fourth quarter, James completed an 18 yard touchdown pass to Salinas with 10:46 left to put Hermiston up 36-0. Hood River did not get on the scoreboard until there was 1:51 left in the game, when running back Michael Jones ran nine yards for the touchdown. Jones inished the game with 104 yards rushing on 13 carries. Hood River quarterback Ca- den Leiblein was eficient against Hermiston’s defense, completing 22-27 passes for 163 yards, but had one interception. Hermiston will return home this week to host Ridgeview on Friday at 7 p.m. in Hermis- ton’s 2016 Homecoming game. Ridgeview of Redmond is 1-2 in league action this year and 1-4 on the season. Ridgeview’s only win on the season so far is against Hood River Valley, 12-6, on Sept. 16. ——— 1 2 3 4 — F Hermiston 6 8 14 8 — 36 Hood River Valley 0 0 0 6 — 6 Statistics PASSING — Andrew James 21-34-1, 218, 2 TD. Irrigon wins in EOL debut over Riverside Worship Tigers, Mustangs and Cougars all record wins Football IRRIGON 27, RIV- ERSIDE 6 — The Irrigon Knights won their Eastern Oregon League debut with a big 27-6 win over the Riverside Pirates on Friday night. “The kids did really well tonight,” Irrigon coach Steve Sheller said. “It was a dang struggle all night ... those Riverside kids played really hard.” Irrigon (2-3, 1-0 EOL) did its offensive damage on the ground on Friday, as their backield trio of Josh- ua Aguilera (31 rushes, 96 yards), Carlos Zacarias (10 rushes, 61 yards, TD), and Lino Covarrubia (12 rush- es, 63 yards, TD) combined for 220 yards. Quarterback Austin Rice also ran in two touchdowns. The only touchdown that Irrigon allowed came on a Riverside (1-4, 0-1) hail mary as time expired in the irst half, but shut down the Pirates the rest of the way. “Our defensive backs played outstanding,” Shell- er said. Sheller said that junior cornerback Ryan Verley stood out in the game, mak- ing plays all over the ield and playing solid cover- age on his receivers. Also standing out for Irrigon was Omar and Daniel Vera as each hauled in one inter- ception in the game. “While we’re young, I have kids that show up ready to play every day,” Sheller said,” and I think that was the difference for us in the game.” Irrigon next plays at Vale Friday and Riverside will travel to Umatilla. STANFIELD 62, CUL- VER 28 — At Stanield, the Tigers ran for more than 400 yards as a team for the fourth time in ive games as they dominated the Culver Bulldogs 62-21 on Friday night. “We just stuck to what we do best and that’s run the ball,” Stanield coach Davie Salas said following the win. “We were patient and we ran great between the tackles ... Culver tried to stack the box, but we just wore them down in the sec- ond half.” Running back Thyler Monkus led Stanield (5-0, 1-0 CBC) with 149 rushing yards and three touchdowns on just eight carries, while quarterback Dylan Grogan added three more touch- downs and 97 rushing yards on 10 carries. When it was over, Stan- ield had ive different players with touchdowns. Their numerous weapons from the skill positions on offense is part of the reason why Stanield is so danger- ous. “It allows us to keep fresh legs in during the game ... so we don’t have to run Dylan and Thyler 20 times each half,” Salas said. “We’re a well-conditioned team and in the third and fourth quarters when teams are wearing down we’re still going strong.” Stanield travels to Weston-McEwen Friday at 7 p.m. ——— Stanield Stats Passing: Dylan Grogan 97 yards, 1 TD. HEPPNER 49, WESTON-MCEWEN 6 — At Heppner, the Mus- tangs outgained the Tiger- Scots 420-149 to extend their Columbia Basin Con- ference win streak to 21 games with the 49-6 win on Friday night. Weston-McEwen (1-4, 0-1) scored on its irst pos- session of the game when Kirk Scott connected with Justin Humble on a 46 yard touchdown pass to put Columbia River “Best Dam” Power Run SATURDAY, OCT. 15th Benefiting Eastern Oregon Mission...dba Agape House & Martha’s House 10K..9:30AM 5K...9:45AM the TigerScots up 6-0. But from that point on, it was all Heppner, starting with its defense. The Mustangs unit caused plenty of headaches for the TigerScots. Led by Kevin Murray (11 tackles), Heppner registered 11 tack- les for loss and three sacks, negating a total of 54 yards in the process. “Defensively we real- ly stepped up. We tackled well, we were disciplined and just did our jobs, which was really satisfying,” Hep- pner coach Greg Grant said. “And their effort set up our offense.” For Heppner (4-1, 1-0 CBC), senior Logan Grieb and junior Coby Daugherty were the stars of the game, combining for seven total touchdowns. Grieb ran for 111 yards on 11 carries with two scores and also hauled in four catches for 91 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Daugherty ran for a sea- son-high 149 yards on 11 carries with three touch- downs. It was also a breakout game of sorts for quarter- back Kevin Smith, who completed 9-17 passes for 130 yards and a pair of scores. “Kevin had a great game,” Grant said. “He was eficient, made some accu- rate throws and was quick in his decision making.” Jacob Speed was the leading rusher for Weston-McEwen with 39 yards on 10 carries and Lo- gan Bates added 30 yards on two carries. Scott also completed 3-5 passes for 51 yards and one touchdown. ECHO 52, WALLOWA 26 — At Echo, the Cougars overcame a slow start in the irst half and used a big third quarter to run away with a win over Wallowa on Friday night. “It’s a big win for us,” Echo coach Rick Thew said. “We’ve been pushed around by Wallowa the last few years, and it felt good to win one like this after a tough game last week.” After trailing 12-6 at the end of the irst quar- ter, Echo (2-2, 1-1 SD1) outscored Wallowa 14-6 in the second to take a 20- 18 lead into the break. And in the third quarter, Echo was able to open the game up and scored 26 points to hold a 46-18 lead at the end of three. “We had our two best linemen out, so it took us a bit to get our connections down,” Thew said of the slow start. “But once we settled in, the boys felt the momentum shifting and kept getting better and bet- ter. “Then in the third quar- ter, the boys had the men- tality to go all-out, and they followed through.” Quarterback Devan Craig had a big game for Echo with 158 passing yards and three touch- downs to go with 146 rush- ing yards and four touch- downs.
