WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2016 ROUNDUP: continued from Page A10 the backield with 105 yards on 23 carries. “When I look out at the ield, we have a lot of young guys that are really talented,” Sheller said, “but when you start a bunch of sophomores it will take time to grow. “The players are frustrated, the coaches are frustrated, but it’s a positive frustration if that makes sense,” Sheller added. “It’s not a helpless or defeated emotion, every- one’s just looking for ways to get better and that’s exciting.” Irrigon will start its irst year of Eastern Oregon League play next Friday when they host Riverside at 7 p.m. MAC-HI 41, RIVERSIDE 26 — At Boardman, Riley Chester accounted for more than 280 all-purpose yards and the Pioneers forced three turnovers on defense to key a non- league win over Riverside on Saturday. Chester ran for 141 yards and two touch- downs on 34 carries and had one of two interceptions for the Mac-Hi () defense. Austin Leonetti had the other, and Michael Breeding set up a touchdown with a jarring hit to force a fumble that Spencer Wells scooped up and returned to the end zone. Pioneers quarterback Drew Birdwell was 11-of-20 passing for 152 yards and Kassius Gonzales also found the end zone for Mac-Hi. He inished with 22 yards on eight carries. STANFIELD 20, REGIS 14 — The Stanield Tigers came up big on fourth down on back-to-back drives to turn away the Regis Rams in a gridiron battle of 2A powers on Friday night. After taking the lead on a 4th-and-goal in the fourth quarter, the Tigers made a goal- line stand on defense to get the ball back and run out the clock for a 20-14 win. “It was one you guys didn’t want to miss,” said Stanield coach Davy Salas after his Tigers improved to 4-0. “Two of the top teams in the state battled it out. … Those kids played their butts off tonight on both sides.” HERMISTONHERALD.COM • A11 SPORTS Stanield struck irst with rushing touchdowns by Thyler Monkus and Adrian Renner in the irst quarter, but Regis (2-2) was able to keep them off the scoreboard for the next two quarters and took the lead in the second half. “They were getting off blocks all night,” Salas said of an active Regis defense. “They were the one team that was able to match our athletes and our power and our speed, and it was going to come down to who got that last stop and that last score.” Trailing 14-12 midway through the fourth quarter the Tigers got the break they were looking for when Justin Shelby got behind the Rams defense on a play-action pass and caught a 35-yard pass from Dylan Grogan to put the ball on the Regis 25. The Tigers moved the ball inside the 10, and faced fourth-and-goal from the ive when it looked like Grogan was going to be wrapped short of the end zone on an option run. Somehow he was able to lip the ball to Monkus, though, and the senior running back beat the defense to the corner of the end zone. The two-point conversion was good, but the Tigers still needed a stop. They got it eventually after Regis marched down the ield to get 1st-and-goal on the Stanield four. Four straight running plays were stuffed at the line for a turnover on downs, and Stanield was able to get a irst down on offense before running out the clock. Monkus inished with 74 yards on 16 carries, Shelby totaled two catches for 55 yards and Grogan was 6-of-10 passing for 133 yards with one interception. The Vikings (4-0) gained more than 400 yards of total offense in the game, as Kaden Webb threw for 184 yards and three touchdowns while Trent Durfey ran 25 times for 130 yards in the game. “We’re still improving,” Umatilla coach Dan Durfey said. “Every team wants to be sharp heading toward the playoffs and that’s what we’re looking for every week.” One aspect Durfey was not happy about was the Vikings giving up all 26 points to Portland Christian in the fourth quarter. “We lost a little focus in the fourth quar- ter and they jumped on us,” Durfey said. “We need to be better next time.” Umatilla’s next game is Friday when it hosts Burns at 7 p.m. ——— UHS (4-0) 13 0 16 7 — 36 PC (2-2) 0 0 0 26 — 26 Umatilla Statistics PASSING — Kaden Webb: 10-18-3, 3 TD RUSHING — Trent Durfey 25-130; Cody Sampson 8-44, TD; Kaden Webb 6-45, TD; Leonel Corona 5-12.
