John Brinker ‘Cowboy’ Ramos Jan A. Vyhnal Echo May 21, 1935-April 10, 2016 Heppner November 12, 1934-May 10, 2016 J o h n B r i n k e r “Cowboy” Ramos died at his home on April 10, 2016, surrounded by his family, close friends and his little dog Sally. Cowboy was born May 21, 1935, in Pendleton, Or- egon. He was the third child of Joseph Ramos G. and Helen L. (Brinker) Ramos. Cowboy attended all of his school years in Echo, where he was a standout student and athlete. He played football, basketball, baseball and was involved in certain county track meets. He graduated from Echo High School in 1953 as the class valedictori- an. His senior year he was a starting member on the 1953 state championship basketball team coached by George DeLap. He was also selected to play in the annu- al East/West Shrine football game. Cowboy went on to attend the University of Oregon (GO DUCKS) un- til he joined the Navy in 1956 with his older brother Swede. While at the U of O, he became a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity, of which many of his fraterni- ty brothers became close, life-long friends. He was also involved in the sports program as a pitcher on the freshman baseball team and the quarterback for the freshman football team. He was actually recruited to U of O by Bill Bowerman. While in the Navy he met Elaine Hurford at a col- lege dance when his ship, the USS Hamner DD-718, was docked in Brisbane, Australia, in August of 1956. In 1958 he returned to the U of O after his dis- charge from the Navy, all the while corresponding with Elaine over the next ive years. He returned to Brisbane in September of 1960, working for the city of Southport, while Elaine taught school at St. Hilda’s Girls School. They were married on January 7th, 1961, in Brisbane and re- turned to the Ramos family farm in Echo on January 28th, 1961. They started their family as the irst of ive children was born that October. Cowboy continued to work on the family farm until semi-retiring in the late 1990s. He worked for Stanield/Westland Irri- gation District for several years. The job he loved the most was when he pur- chased a Mitsubishi ex- cavator and an old dump truck to form Somar Ex- cavation. He then started doing jobs for many of the local farmers. It was of- ten said that no one could operate an excavator like him. Burns Mortuary of Hermiston, Oregon, is in care of arrangements. Long-time Hermiston/ Heppner res- ident Jan A. Vyhnal, 81, passed away Tu e s d a y, May 10th. Mr. Vyhnal was born November 12, 1934, in Prague, Czech Republic, to parents Jan Vaclav and Anna Buerova Vyhnal. He served as a paratrooper in the Vyhnal United States Army during the Korean War. He was employed at J & M Pipe Manufacturing and worked for Marlette Mobile Home Manufacturing for 27 years. He enjoyed his peace and tranquility on his prop- erty in the mountains above Heppner. He loved to run and stay it. He will be remem- bered for his singing, he would often sing Czech songs for family and friends. He is survived by children Pete Vyhnal, Juanita Gon- zalez, John Vyhnal, Angi Ringering and Katrina Brood, nine grandchildren, sev- en great-grandchildren and many family members in the Czech Republic. Richard ‘Dick’ Huston Ph.D. Clackamas August 13, 1933-March 12, 2016 D i c k Huston, 82, passed away March 12, 2016, in Clackamas, Oregon. He was born August 13, 1933, in Ukiah, Oregon, to Clarence “Kelly” Huston and Alma (Parrish) Huston. After graduation from Ukiah High School, Dick attend- Huston ed Eastern Oregon College, earning both a bachelor’s and master’s de- gree in education. He later earned his doctorate degree in educational psychology at Indiana University. Prior to beginning his long ca- reer in education, he served in the U.S. Army for two years in Germany. He was a teacher and counselor in the Pendleton School District as well as being the school psychol- ogist coordinator for the Umatilla County Education Service District. He retired from the ESD in 1985 and began a tour of the world, traveling ex- tensively with Evelyn, his wife of 61 years. In be- tween their journeys, they spent time at their beach home in Rockaway. Dick was an avid isherman and enjoyed many hours on the water, both here in Oregon and in the many countries they traveled to. Each fall he returned to Ukiah to hunt deer and elk. Dick especially enjoyed his involve- ment with Happy Canyon. He began as a cast member in 1958 and had var- ious roles in the show. In 1986, he was appointed to the Happy Canyon Board of Directors and served as the games director until 1991. Many memories and friendships were made during those years. Dick is survived by his wife Evelyn, daughters Kel- li Lindell of Portland and Kerri Jacobsen (Mike) of Oregon City. He had three grandsons, Ryan Lindell (Jenny), Drew Lindell and Neal Jacobsen. In addition, he has one great-grandson, Harris Lindell. A memorial service for Dick will be held Satur- day, June 4, at 3:00 p.m. at Hamley’s Steakhouse in Pendleton.
