IRRIGON 16-7, HEP- PNER 10-6 — At Irrigon, the Knights were able to ex- tend their winning streak to a season-best seven games as they held off the Heppner Mustangs in a doubleheader on Saturday. In game one, Irrigon (13- 4, 8-1 SD6) the Knights were pushed to victory by leadoff hitter Fredy Vera, who in- ished 3-3 with a pair of home runs, three runs scored and six RBI. Vera’s irst home run was a two-run shot in the third inning and the second was a three-run shot in the sixth inning. Heppener (2-11, 1-5 SD6) had some big performances of their own, headlined by Will Lutcher going 4-5 with a run and ive RBI. Tim Jaca and Kevin Murray each con- tributed two hits and com- bined to score ive runs. In game two, Heppner nearly pulled off the upset as Irrigon starting pitcher Austin Rice did not have his best per- formance. The usually-domi- nant Rice threw only four in- nings and walked ive batters while allowing two hits and four runs. Vera pitched three innings in relief and gave up just a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning to earn the win. ——— Game 1 R H E HHS 030 510 1 — 10 11 5 IHS 245 113 X — 16 10 1 Kindle, Lutcher (3). With starters Mya Chapman and Bea Agu- ilera already out with injuries, the shufled Knights lineup struggled in the second game. Irrigon left the bases load- ed twice in the 15-6 loss, and committed six errors in the ield to help Burns (13-5, 6-3). Echo (16-5, 11-1 EOL) loaded the bases right from the start in the irst inning, be- hind singles from Cheyenne Hilliard and Erika Parks and a walk from Christopher. Two batters later, the Cougars got on the board when Hilliard scored on a passed ball, fol- lowed by Parks scoring on a ielding error by the Grant Union third baseman. Those runs were all the Cougars would need because starting pitcher Macken- zie Gonzales kept the Grant Union bats quiet allowing just two hits and one walk over 5.2 innings with six strike- outs. Alyssa Ray threw 1.1 innings in relief and allowed one hit and two walks with a pair of strikeouts. Hilliard, Kenzie Blanken- ship and Monique Montoya each had two hits on the day to lead the Cougars offense. ——— R H E EHS 200 001 0 — 3 9 0 GUH 000 000 0 — 0 3 7 Gonzales, Ray (6). Moulton.
