SPORTS A10 • HERMISTONHERALD.COM WEDNESDAY, APRIL 27, 2016 PREP ROUNDUP TRACK & FIELD Hermiston leaps, throws to Kiwanis victory The Hermiston Bulldog boys dominated the ield events at Saturday’s 12- team Kiwanis Invitational at Kennison Field, earning the team a gold medal at their biggest home meet of the season. The girls took second behind Kamiakin, while both Pendleton teams inished third. Tre Neal, a senior, threw the longest shot put (52-10.25) and discus (160-07), while junior Hi- ram Maciel had the best high jump (6-00). The boys 4x100 relay team of Andrew Horn, Vae- mu Ena, Alexis Mercado and Tyler Rohrman also chalked a irst place inish. Xavier Rambo’s second place in the long jump and triple jump and Will Shar- key’s third place in the pole vault cemented the win. On the girls side, Macie Foley won the 800-me- ter (2:26.82) and ran with Sara Ortiz, Audrey Lin- coln and Elsa Torres to a win in the 4x400 relay. Pendleton seniors No- lan Bylenga and Gari- son Alger scored the two best inishes for the boys teams, with Bylen- ga winning the 800-meter (2:01.23) and Alger win- ning the 300-meter hur- dles (42.30). They also teamed up with Andrew Porter and Soren Wolf to win the 4x400 relay. Kiara Glover won the only gold on the Pendle- ton girls side with a 5-foot high jump. Ione tracksters place in Portland Christian Invitational It was a big afternoon for Ione’s Flynns at the Port- land Christian Invitational on Saturday. The Cardinals’ Jessie and Cord Flynn had the highest placings for Ione at the meet, and Jorge Aguilar was the only other Cardi- nals to land in the top ive. Jessie Flynn placed in four events, going for sec- ond in the 300-meter hur- dles (51.79 seconds), third in the 100 hurdles (17.96) and discus (90-01), and ifth in long jump (14-11). Cord Flynn was second in discus (114-11) and sev- enth in javelin (134-7), and Aguilar was fourth in shot put (38-7). Kelsey Ranger places 2nd in triple jump Echo’s Kelsey Ranger inished second in the triple jump at Union’s Pepsi Invita- tional on Saturday. Ranger leapt a season-best 31-11 to take second in girls’ triple jump. BASEBALL STANFIELD 6, TAFT 4 — At Lincoln City, the Stan- ield Tigers earned a solid non-league win against the Taft Tigers on Saturday after- noon. Stanield (16-2, 6-0) ap- peared to be rolling to an easy shut-out victory as Bro- dy Woods was rolling to a complete-game win on the mound. But then Woods al- lowed four runs in the bot- tom of the seventh to give the Tigers some life. However, Ryan Bailey came on in relief and closed the door getting two outs on just four pitches to earn the save. At the plate, Tony Flores inished 2-4 with a run and two RBI while Dylan Gro- gran inished 1-4 with one double, one run and one RBI. Grogan got the scoring started in the irst inning with an RBI double to left ield, scoring Tyhler Monkus to give Stanield a 1-0 lead. Grogan then came around and scored on a steal of home to put Stanield up 2-0 after one inning. ——— R H E SHS 201 003 0 — 6 9 1 THS 000 000 4 — 4 4 4 Woods, Bailey (7) and Monkus. STANFIELD 6, MON- ROE 5 — At Lincoln City, the Stanield Tigers knocked off the No. 1 ranked Monroe Dragons in extra innings on Saturday afternoon. In the eighth inning and game tied at 5-5, Ryan Bailey got things started in the inning with a one-double to right ield and then Dylan Grogan was intentionally walked to put runners on with one out. Brody Woods then lied out to right ield for the second out, and the scoring chance for the Tigers seemed slim. But then Keith Wampler drew a walk on a full-count to load the bases, and Blanken- ship followed that at-bat with a hit-by-pitch on a 2-2 count to bring in the winning run. Bailey inished the game 3-5 at the plate with one run and one RBI, while Grogan was 2-3 with two runs and on RBI. Tony Flores started the game on the mound for Stanield (17-2, 6-0 EOL) and went four innings with 10 strikeouts, while al- lowing one hit, four runs (one earned) and six walks. Wampler and Bailey each came on in relief, combin- ing for four innings, three hits allowed, one unearned run, three strikeouts and two walks.
