Josh Dever is a good all-around player, as is Diego Soto. Cory Landon has given the Vikings an offensive boost this season, as well. I can’t say for certain the Vikings will push Stan¿eld at the top of the CBC, so that’ll be something to keep an eye on over the next few months. But watch out for Umatilla. The Vikings are coming in their longboats. . Hermiston track: Boys ¿rst at Buck Track Classic, Girls second The Bulldogs started the 2016 season splitting the Buckaroo Track Classic with host Pendleton. Audrey Lincoln ran fast, as she’s known to do. Tre Neal threw far, as he’s known to do. But a Bulldog freshman might be the story. Elsa Torres burst onto the CBC scene with a win in the 200 meters, winning by almost half a second. Interestingly, the top three girls in the 200 meters were freshman. But that’s neither here nor there. The 3 Bulldogs, though, had a lot of names at the top of the results list. It’s important to show well at these big tournaments, as they’re the most like the OSAA Championships, which are massive. Hermiston showed well. Lincoln was the only sprinter to break 13 seconds in the 100 meters at 12.99. Her personal best is half a second faster. That’ll be fun to watch. Neal almost broke 140 feet in the discus. His best is nine feet further. That’ll be fun to watch. . Hermiston softball: 2-1, OSAA No. 10 Another it’s-really- early-don’t-freak-out team, but equally deserving of being on this list thus far. Outside of a 10-3 defeat that wasn’t at all how the score would indicate, the Bulldogs have played well in their ¿rst three games. An athletic and talented Liberty team was swept at Rocky Heights Elementary behind strong team-wide performances. Sometimes, a fresh voice is needed. Nothing against Kylee Lete, who is now at Umatilla coaching softball, but sometimes a fresh eyes and fresh words help a lot. That appears to be the case in Hermiston, where the Bulldogs feel re-energized with new 4 expectations and a new style. We all know the Columbia Basin Conference is tough in baseball and softball — since the CBC was formed before the 2010-11 school year, a CRC softball team has played in each 5A softball state championship game and a baseball team ahs been in the last two — so Hermiston isn’t guaranteed anything. But it’s only been three years since the Bulldogs lost to Sandy in the state title game. . Hermiston baseball: 3-1 In four games, the Bulldogs have scored 20 runs and allowed ¿ve. Outside of a 3-1 loss to Ridgeview, the Bulldogs have done what they hoped: pitch well and hit enough. Head coach Lance Hawkins’ reliance upon senior lefty RJ Robles seems well- placed, as he’s been at least decent in both his starts. Even his debut against Ridgeview, in which he was getting behind hitters and working up in the zone, only resulted in three Ravens runs in total. Add in some pitching depth with side-armer Hayden Edmiston, power arm Tyler Sexton, righty Chase Root, and some offense from Daniel Gossler, Root Robles and Edmiston, and the 5 WEDNESDAY, MARCH 23, 2016 Bulldogs have put themselves in a really good position early in the season. As we established with the Bulldogs softballers, the CRC is a tough league. Pendleton can play, and Hood River has consecutive appearances in the state title game. Hawkins noted his alma mater hasn’t won a league title since 1982. He says it’s time. This might be the team to do it. Honorable mention: Man, Fabian Cardenas can run. He won both the 800 and 3,000 meters at last week’s Buck Track Classic, and neither race was close. His 800 meter time was the only to break two minutes and it was a personal best. His 3,000 time was considerably slower, but that’ll certainly go down. Cardenas is looking to sweep the distance titles after winning the small- school cross country title in the fall. Ryan Bailey and Grogan each singled with one out, and Woods drove in Monkus with a ¿elder’s choice. Wampler dumped a single into right ¿eld to plate Grogan, then Justin Keeney was beaned. With two out, Jason Fitzpatrick softly lined a sin- gle down the right ¿eld line, plating Wampler, and Adrian Renner followed with an RBI single to put Stan¿eld up 5-0. Monkus, at-bat for the second time in the frame, was hit by a pitch, and Flores singled, plating Fitz- patrick and moving to second on the throw. Bailey then reached on an error to extend the inning, and Grogan made Union pay with an RBI single past the third baseman, driving home Flores. Woods followed with another single to plate Bailey, and Grogan scored Stanfeild’s tenth of the frame when Wampler reached on an error. In total, Stan¿eld scored nine of its 10 runs in the bottom of the third with two outs. Stan¿eld got ¿ve more to drive home the point in the fourth. Woods’ two-RBI double came in the frame, a sharp liner down the right ¿eld line, and Monkus and Bailey each had RBI singles in the frame. For a Stan¿eld team that has high expectations for itself, a fast start was crucial. On Thursday, a fast start is what they got behind the nearly perfect pitching of Grogan and the balanced offensive at- tack by the Tigers. “We’re just doing it for us. We’re trying to win. It’s a big deal,” Grogan said. “No one’s thinking about their individuals.
