PENDLETON Wednesday, March 16, 2016 East Oregonian/Hermiston Herald Page 3 %XFNDURRVFRQ¿GHQWXQGHUQHZFRDFK 2016 SCHEDULE P ENDLETON B ASEBALL COACH: T.J. Haguewood, 1st year 2015 SEASON: 14-15 overall, 7-5 CRC (2nd) POSTSEASON STORY: The No. 14 seed Buckaroos lost to Hood River 1-0 in the semi¿nals oI the 5$ state tournament. RETURNERS: Quinn Cock- burn, sr., P; Caden Smith, jr., INF; Kai Quinn, sr., OF; James Bradt, sr., INF/RHP. By ERIC SINGER East Oregonian I n 2015, the Pendleton baseball team became a Cinderella story in the 5$ state tournament as the No. 14 seed Buckaroos knocked oII the No. 3 seed Corvallis and the No. 6 seed Crescent Valley to earn a trip to the semi¿nals. The Bucks nearly made it to the state championship game, losing 1-0 to the eventual state champion and league rival Hood River Valley. But with that loss ushered in a new era in Pendleton baseball, as long-time coach Greg Whitten stepped aside aIter 10 years. In his place is assistant and Iormer Western-McEwen head coach T.J. Haguewood, who says that program expectations shouldn’t change moving Iorward. “There’s always expectations Ior playoIIs and to compete Ior the state title,” he said. “We’ve had decades oI successIul base- Staff photo by Kathy Aney Mar. 15 Mar. 1 Mar. 21 Mar. 24 Mar. 25 Mar. 25 Mar. 26 Mar. 2 $pr. 4 $pr. 7 $pr. 11 $pr. 16 $pr. 1 $pr. 23 $pr. 26 $pr. 2 May 3 May 6 May 10 May 13 May 16 vs. Southridge (W$) at HanIord ('H) vs. Roseburg ('H) vs. Madison (at Boise, I') vs. Skyline (at Boise, I') vs. Jerome (at Boise, I') vs. Canyon (at Boise, I') vs. /a Grande vs. Walla Walla at /a Grande at Walla Walla at Hood River ('H) vs. Hood River at The 'alles ('H) vs. The 'alles vs. Hermiston ('H) at Hermiston vs. Hood River vs. The 'alles at Hermiston vs. Baker 4 p.m. 3 p.m. 12 p.m. Noon :30 a.m. 2:30 p.m. :30 a.m. 4 p.m. 4 p.m. 4:30 p.m. 4 p.m. Noon 4:30 p.m. 12 p.m. 4:30 p.m. 4 p.m. 4:30 p.m. 4:30 p.m. 4:30 p.m. 4:30 p.m. 4:30 p.m. In this April 21, 2015 ile photo, James Bradt, of Pendleton, makes contact in a bases league game loaded situation against Hood River at Bob White Field. ball not because oI one man but because oI the community that supports the teams and develops the kids each year.” The 2016 Buckaroos are built just like the 2015 version — a good pitching staII with good hitting and great deIense. “We should be real solid deIensively and we should put some pressure on our opponents by bringing good approaches to the plate,” Haguewood said. “We should have a solid staII as long as they keep the ball down and let the deIense do the work.” Pendleton will have to ¿ll in the holes leIt by the departures oI six seniors including all-league selections in out¿elder Kyler /unny, in¿elder Tony Papol, in¿elder Brady Smith, and catcher $lex O’Rourke. In their place, Haguewood says he’s intrigued to see how some oI the younger players step in and develop over the course oI the season. “We have several guys that are looking to crack the varsity lineup, and we’ve seen guys in a lot oI diIIerent positions at prac- tice which has been interesting,” he said. “Guys like (sophomore) Nick Bower, (junior) $ustin Zaugg, and (sophomore) Shaw Jerome could break in quick and get a lot oI varsity playing time ... we have some holes but we have plenty oI guys back to help.” Pendleton will lean heavy on returners such as senior out¿elder Kai Quinn, in¿elder James Bradt, and junior in¿elder Caden Smith — who was a ¿rst team all-con- Ierence selection aIter hitting .2 with two home runs, ¿ve doubles, and 17 RBI. On the mound, the Bucks will once again lean on senior pitcher Quinn Cockburn to carry the load at the Iront end oI the rotation. He turned in a solid season with a 5-5 record and a 2.25 ER$ which was good enough to land on the second team all-CRC. $Iter Cockburn, Haguewood mentioned that the rotation is still being hammered out, but guys like senior James Bradt and Wyatt Morris will are leading candidates to round out the staII. $s the ¿rst pitches are about to be thrown, Haguewood knows there are still areas oI his squad that need shored up. “$s a coach I always see weaknesses,” he said. “Our two-strike approach needs to improve, as well as better at the small things.” One new thing that Hague- wood and his staII will have to deal with in 2016 is tracking pitch counts, as the OS$$ has recommended the change Irom innings limits to count limits Ior this season as the abundance oI arm injuries across the game oI baseball has increased in recent years. “Kids are throwing a lot more baseballs and pitches now with extra leagues and travel teams, so the reasoning behind it is under- standable,” he said. “Overall it’s a good thing, it levels the playing ¿eld because you have to rely on the team instead oI just one guy.” PENDLETON Good Luck !
