He stopped on the shoulder of the highway, and others stopped to help him put out a fire in the engine compartment. Their efforts, though, were not enough. The fire reached the cab and destroyed it. The trailer, which contained barrels of “food product,” state po- lice reported, only sustained minor damage to wiring and brake lines. Police closed down both lanes of the westbound freeway for about 45 minutes to an hour while firefighters doused the blaze, and a Pendleton contractor responded to clean up diesel fuel. SUITS FILED The following suits have been filed in Umatilla County courts: •The Bank of New York Mellon observing traffic on Interstate 84 at milepost 200 a few miles east of Pendleton when two vehicles at 8:24 p.m. zoomed by. The first, a two-door Volkswagen, was going 100 mph, according to state police, and the second, a Dodge pickup, was at 117. The trooper chased, and the driver in the Volkswagen hit the brakes in front of the pickup, near- ly causing a crash. The trooper stopped the car and waved for the pickup to stop, but it did not. The trooper, though, later caught up with that driver. Abdulaziz Alqasimi, 25 of Boise, drove the Volkswagen, and Jordon Travis Beckley, 22, of Hermiston, drove the Dodge. The trooper cited both for driving faster than 100 mph, and gave an additional ticket to Alqasimi for reckless driving. •Hermiston police arrested Jaime Moras Nava, 26, of Paterson, Washington, for driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving and on a warrant for failure to appear. Hermiston Police arrested Jody Jack Allen, 47, of Pendleton, for felony aggravated theft (value $10,000), unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, and four warrants for failure to pay fines.
