They also included children in their jokes. One time, in the second half, they stopped the game and brought out a little boy. They had him shoot, and when he couldn’t score the basketball that was bigger than his head, they lifted him up so he could essentially dunk, then gave him a jersey. Every gag involving a person ended with a gift. Sometimes it was a “sweaty” armband, some- times it was a jersey. Either way, everyone who partici- pated got something. “The way they got the whole audience involved so often with so many things to do, I thought it was a really cool thing,” Barzee said. It’s clear why the Glo- betrotters cater to young people. It’s the majority of the audience. In the quaint Toyota Center, only a hand- ful of fans didn’t have a child or young person with them. Grandparents took their grandchildren. Par- ents came with their fam- ilies. Kids anywhere from 2-years-old to 12-years-old to teenagers were there. Lines formed whenever there was time to buy the famous Globetrotters bas- ketballs. After the game, an autograph session gave ev- erybody an opportunity to walk away with a souvenir. Caitlin Korause drove from Spokane with her family and, while holding a basketball to be signed, said her favorite part was Rock- et Pennington climbing on the basket. About 30 people formed the Hermiston group. But the Globetrotters also know the impact they can have. During a timeout, Hawk Thomas stepped to half court and gave a speech about battling adversity and doing what you set your mind to. Thomas overcame serious barriers to become a Harlem Globetrotter, and, together with World Vision, a charity helping children around the world get the services and goods they need, they’re trying to help the group that most enjoys their work. They under- stand most of the audience is going to be kids, and they consciously use their plat- form to try and help them as much as possible.
