SPORTS WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2015 SCOREBOARD SPORTS CALENDAR Football standings: Week 4 Wednesday, September 23 In three weeks of football, Stanfield has been a surprise. Following a disappoint- ing 2014 filled with injuries and unmet expectations, the Tigers have steamrolled through their first three games en route to a 3-0 record and plus-97 point differential. Having a healthy Dylan Grogan has been the difference to the Tigers, with a fresh(er) Thyler Monkus helping to wreak havoc on opposing defenses. Stanfield gets Imbler this week, a team that’s 1-2 and coming off a 34-20 win. Meanwhile, Umatilla just didn’t have enough against Irrigon. It was close after a half, but the Knights proved to be too athletic and explosive on offense for the Vikings. Irrigon now leads a Columbia Basin Conference that appears wide open with Stanfield, Heppner and the Knights all undefeated with large point spreads. But Umatilla finds itself one of three teams with 2-1 records in the 3A Eastern Oregon League. The Vikings get White Swan (WA) this week, which beat the Vikings last year. But the Cougars are 0-3 this year and coming off a 20-0 defeat. Hermiston is struggling. With a young quarterback, and young everything else, it will take time to get back into champion- ship form. Hermiston heads to Lewiston to take on the 3-0 Bengals who played Herm- iston close for a half here last season. And Echo scored a mind-blowing 84 points against a beleaguered Harper/ Huntington squad. Klay Jenson’s hip injury from a week ago had no bearing, as the Cougars piled on the points. But Echo has to turn around and make the long drive to Wallowa to play the always tough Cougars this week. You just gotta wait.’ We gotta listen to Coach Sheller because he’s always right. And that’s what we did.” Irrigon’s wing-T ground attack wore down the Uma- tilla defense in the second half. Two- and three-yard runs became ¿ve- and si[- yard runs, with Vera and Carlos Zacharias breaking a few. Irrigon also had a couple long touchdown completions to Zacharias called back with holding penalties. Umatilla head coach Mike Mosher, though, is convinced that 39-12 doesn’t tell the whole sto- ry. He said if a couple big plays were eliminated, it’s a different game. “2verall, I think we played pretty damn tough FOOTBALL continued from Page A8 Irrigon an 18-6 lead. Then Umatilla scored just before half, wildly swinging the momentum back to the home team. In the halftime huddle, Shell- er told his team to settle down, and they did. “Things went their way in the ¿rst half,” Irrigon se- nior Freddy Vera, who had blocks, and Shayanne Connell had eight assists. TIGERS: continued from Page A8 Saturday at Union. The Bobcats swept the Tigers 3-0 (13- 25, 19-25, 15-25) in a match head coach Angie Connell called “inconsistent.” “We just did not stay consistent,” she said. “We had some strong moments, but then we saw some moments where we were just losing our momentum out there.” Connell said Union has some “pretty good” hitters who were ¿nding the back corners of the court. “(The players) were ¿nding it tough to get all the ones we couldn’t block,” Con- nell said. BOYS SOCCER StanÀeld sZeeps 1i[yaaZii The Stan¿eld Tigers volleyball team broke a two-match losing streak Mon- day, sweeping Ni[yaawii 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-11) Monday in Stan¿eld. The Tigers (4-4, 0-1) hosted a Ni[y- aawii (2-5, 0-1) program that is in its sec- ond year of e[istence and still building. Maddie *rif¿n had 11 aces, 10 assists and three kills to lead the way. Katie Burns chipped in with seven kills and Kenzie *onzales had si[ kills. Stan¿eld hosts Weston-Mc(wen at 5 p.m. on Thursday. It’s Stan¿eld’s sec- ond Columbia Basin Conference match and Weston-McEwen’s debut. Umatill blows by City Christian After a slow start, the Umatilla boys soccer program has found its groove. Umatilla continued its winning streak with a 5-1 win Saturday at City Christian. The Vikings (3-3, 2-1 E2/) scored just three goals in its ¿rst three matches in its 0-3 start, but has scored 15 goals in its last three matches in three wins. Head coach Pedro 2r- tiz called it a “dif¿cult game” due to the condi- tions and small pitch size. But with the adversity, 2rtiz liked the way his team moved the ball. “I belive they began to understand what Im ask- ing of them and are get- ting better at it.” Miguel Aguilar opened the scoring off a long pass from Diego Saldana in the 15th min- ute, and Saldana found Javier *arcia ¿ve min- utes later in the penalty area for Umatilla’s sec- ond. In the 32nd, Douglas *omez dribbled into the penalty area and his shot was saved, but Saldana headed in the rebound for a 3-0 lead. *omez then controlled a rebound off a corner kick from *erardo Coria in the 37th minute and found the back of the net for a 4-0 lead. City Christian got its goal int he 50th after a defensive mistake, and Umatilla got it back in the 70th when Saldana received a pass from *o- mez, dribbled past two defenders and scored.
