Echols will celebrate their 70th anniversary Sat- urday, May 16 at an open house from 1-3 at Church of the Nazarene, 1520 W. Orchard Ave., Hermiston. All friends and acquain- tances are invited. The Echols moved to Hermiston in 1973 when Hal was assigned as com- mander at Umatilla Army Depot. After his retirement in 1975, they moved back to Hermiston, bought a ranch on the Umatilla River and built their dream house. Although they had lived all over the U.S., as well as Europe and Hawaii, they chose to retire in Hermiston because of all the friendly people they had met while stationed here. They were married in Santa Ana, Calif., on May 20, 1945. They met in kin- dergarten and started dating when they were 14 and 15. They were married at 18 and 19. Hal served in the Merchant Marines during World War II, delivering fuel to various ports all over the world. After the war, he attended Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater, Okla. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant and served 22 years, including two tours in Viet Nam. -HDQQH UDLVHG ¿YH FKLO- dren, often alone, while Evelyn J. Gerard of Irri- gon, Ore., was born on Au- gust 28, 1938, in Modesto, California, to parents Sherman and Opal Goad Whitbeck. She died on May 4, 2015, in Hermiston, Ore- gon, at the age of 76 years. Evelyn was raised in California until the early 1950s when her family moved to Gerard Hood River, Ore- gon. She married Walter E. “Walt” Gerard Sr. On December 1, 1955, in Ste- venson, Washington. They moved to Irrigon, Oregon, in 1974 where they have lived since. Evelyn worked for Gour- met Brands in Boardman, Oregon, for nine years. She enjoyed gardening, watch- ing her son race stock cars, and cherished her time with her family. She is survived by her husband, Walt Gerard, Ir- rigon, Ore.; son Walter Gerard Jr., Irrigon, Ore.; brothers Monte Whitbeck, Hermiston, Ore., and Jer- ry Whitbeck, The Dalles, Ore.; sister Peggy Bell, St. Helens, Ore.; grandchil- dren Jeremy, Rocky, Tif- fany and Jasmine; great-grandchildren Hunter, Maylee and Jade; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Evelyn was pre- ceded in death by her parents; daugh- ter Delma Gerard; son Roger Gerard; and brothers Teddy and Roger Whitbeck. Harvey of Herm- iston, Oregon, was born on January 21, 1935, in Baker City, Oregon. He died on May 3, 2015, in Hermiston, Oregon, at the age of 80 years. Harold was raised and attended schools in Hermiston, Oregon, until high school when he attended Upper Columbia Academy. He then attended and graduated from Walla Harvey Walla College with a bachelor’s degree in educa- tion. Harold was an elementary teacher for a number of years and then worked for Marlette Homes in Hermiston, Oregon, for 25 years until he retired. He had a full and rich re- WLUHPHQW ¿OOHG ZLWK WUDYHOLQJ to many locations around the world and time spent with his family. He was an active mem- ber of Anchor Point Church, a YROXQWHHUDWWKH6WDQ¿HOG)RRG Basket, and an avid reader. Har- old made friends where ever he was and will be remembered for his zest for life. He is survived by his daughters Melody Ayers and husband Kirk, Tillamook, Ore., 7KHUHVD%DUURDQGKXVEDQG)L- del, Saipan, MP, Carmen Chaf- fey and husband Tom, College Place, Wash., and Kim Hays, Walla Walla, Wash.; four grandchildren: Erin Krempasky, Sara Ayers, Andrew and Ste- phen Barro; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
