Shaw would take the match 8-5, but Meade pointed out the valuable ex- perience the frosh received. “It’s probably something completely foreign to him, partly because he’s the No. 3 singles player, but also because he’s a freshman,” Meade said of Armenta. “ ... The kid has a lot of oppor- tunity. He probably should have won that match, but it’s something we can work on moving forward. To Meade, though, Thursday wasn’t about the win. He has a bunch of young players who don’t get to play matches very of- ten, and it was important to him to get them into a live scenario. The goal Thurs- day was to improve his players, and he thinks that happened. “The value of playing (Thursday) would be get- ting some expereince for our younger players,” Me- ade said. “I play my top kids pretty hard. I know that they’re always ready for a match. Part of it is just training the younger play- ers to get into the mindset of (being ready to play). There are some players that — yes, they won — but they were nervous. They were timid. They didn’t play as hard as they do in practice. That’s just some- thing that will come along with experience ..
