A2 • HERMISTONHERALD.COM SATURDAY, JANUARY 3, 2015 LOCAL WEATHER Pet of the week Today's Weather Hi, my name is Browny. I am a male pug available for adoption at the Hu- mane Society of Eastern Oregon Pet Rescue in Hermiston. I was a Hermiston stray, and I need a new home. I’ve already had my shots, and I am good with children and other dogs. I am 2 to 3 years old and can be adopted for $150. I come with a free vet check and a three-day return policy. If I am neutered within 60 days of adoption, my owner will receive a $50 refund. If you are interested in welcoming Browny to your family, please stop by the humane society at 1844 N.W. Geer Road, Hermiston, or call 541-564-6222. Local leaders share resolutions for 2015 BY SEAN HART HERMISTON HERALD The new year brings new hope and opportunity and a chance for people to create a variety of goals for the next 12 months. This week, local lead- ers shared their personal New Year’s resolutions. The most common goals centered around fitness and family, but other re- sponses included adopt- ing a different type of diet and even watching football. Hermiston City Man- ager Byron Smith said his goals this year are “better eating and more exercise” but also spending more time with his family. Hermiston School Dis- trict Superintendent Dr. Fred Maiocco said he is still working on his res- olutions from last year: spending more time with his grandchildren and los- ing 10 pounds. He said he has failed at both of those goals so far but is still working on them. Hermiston Police Chief Jason Edmiston said he wants to lose some weight, as well, but also plans to “find the time” to begin working on a mas- ter’s of public administra- tion degree. Debbie Pedro, CEO of the Hermiston Chamber of Commerce, said she wants to “create more exciting memories with family and friends.” Umatilla Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Karen Hutchin- son-Talaski said her goals don’t change from year to year. “My New Year’s res- olutions are the same as they always are — strive to be a good person, giv- ing back to my communi- ty and attempt to declutter my desk,” she said. “The first two are easy, but the last one, not so much.” Echo School District Superintendent Raymon Smith said he hopes to “find time to relax and enjoy life a little more.” Some people, such as Stanfield City Manager Blair Larsen, said they don’t make resolutions with the change of the calendar year. “When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, I am pretty boring,” Larsen said. “I don’t do much at this time of year because I have found that I don’t do well when I start goals at set times. I have person- al goals, but I set those throughout the year as they arise.” Port of Umatilla Gen- eral Manager Kim Puzey and Hermiston Fire Chief Scott Stanton also said they don’t make resolu- tions, and Umatilla City Manager Bob Ward said, while he usually doesn’t, he might try this year. “I am not much of a resolution guy, having made and ignored many over the years,” Ward said. “This year, I will at least entertain an effort to spend more time in my garage, both on a long-ne- glected list of home im- provements as well as some projects for simple personal enjoyment.” Umatilla City Planner Bill Searles said he hopes to “start saving money in- stead of spending it all” this year. “It would be nice to feel like I can be finan- cially comfortable,” he said. “It’s time to start saving money if I ever want to retire — not that I’m looking at retiring soon, but if I ever want to retire.” Hermiston Municipal Court Judge and Herm- iston Herald columnist Thomas Creasing said he hopes to lose another 20 pounds this year and get his Off The Bench col- umns in to the editor be- fore she asks about them. Umatilla School Dis- trict Superintendent Heidi Sipe said she was going on a diet this year — but not one that involves food. “I’m probably going to try to take a bit of a smart phone diet,” she said. “I have the thumb that will twitch after a while if I haven’t checked it every so often, or if it buzzes, I automatically respond, so I would like to learn from that and shut if off every now and again.” Hermiston Assistant City Manager Mark Mor- gan said he is determined to achieve his New Year’s resolution — eventually. “For 2015, I resolve to attend a University of Idaho football game that we actually win, even if takes until 2016,” he said.
