THURSDAY, MARCH 15. 1945. HERMISTON HERALD HERMISTON. OREGON PAGE EIGHT Announcement This Store Closed Hext Meek for Repairs March 19 to 24 Ulatch for Our Easter Specials! Gamble Store WM. SABIN, Owner Stanfield, Ore. MANAGER LISTS DITCH DETAILS (Continued from page 1) These are not paved highways in any sense of the word but make it possible for the ditchriders to fol low the canal, saving many miles of travel and permitting the ditch- riders to give more efficient ser vice. In connection with these new roads, the water users are re minded that the ditch right-of-way must be kept passable at all times and cattle-crossings will need to be installed in place of gates on some farms. About 2,000 feet of new canal will be constructed at the north end of the canal in time for use this season, eliminating a danger ous bottle-neck at that point. As soon as men and equipment are available, some more work is con templated at the spillway on the extreme lower end of the canal. Water will be turned into the main canal some time between March 15th and March 20th and will be brought as far as Butter Creek for the present. Prospects are for about the same amount of water as usual. There won’t be any to waste at any time, but with cooperation and conservative use, there should be enough for every one. Wm. Freeauf will be the head gate man this year. This is a very responsible position as the safety of the entire system depends upon the constant watchfulness of the man at the headgate. Mr. Freeauf is well known in the north end of the district, having been ditchrid er two years ago. Rodger Hollo- mon will be ditchrider on the high line. Mr. Hollomon needs no in troduction to the people of West land, having been a very efficient and reliable headgate man for the I past nine years. At the present time, i no ditchrider has been se- cured for the north end of the sys- tern. Mr. Corliss states that he will spend almost his entire time on the 62 miles of canal but that the office in Dr. Belt’s building in Hermiston will be open every Tuesday and that he can be reach ed at his home almost any even ing or by calling 2929. The directors of the district are Floyd Laird, Ben Conner and Fred McMurray, and regular meetings are held in the district office at 8:00 p. m. the Tuesday following the first Monday in each month. The next meeting, April 3rd, is the meeting set by law for the direc tors to levy the assessment for 1945-46. Anyone interested should contact the directors before the meeting or be at the meeting. Any water user or the Water-Users’ Committee is always welcome at the directors’ meetings. To conserve both time and pa per, this article will take the place of the annual letter which is usually sent each water user. Mr. and Mrs. George Turner at tended the funeral of Mr. Turner's cousin.
