It gave a slight percentage to President Roosevelt which, when all votes are counted, will be about the same as the rest of the na tion except the solid south. This is a good cross sec tion of public sentiment, with its farmer, business and labor vote. Those who feel the weight of defeat of their ideas of the conduct of our government, like all true Amer icans under our proud democracy, can rest assured that they have gained much in the future administra tion of our affairs. The campaign was highly educa tional, and more voters took a keen interest and did more real thinking than in any campaign since the Hughes-Wilson election. The administration restored to power cannot ignore the thousand and one facts the leaders of the Republicans put forth and which were sustained by such a close margin of public opin ion. It can be safely said that domestic program of debts, taxes, bureaucracy, restraint of free enterprise under the New Deal, is severely rebuked, while the conduct of the war and the advisability of sustaining the commander-in-chief until victory is won carried the election for the President into a much disliked fourth term. We do not doubt that under the direction of this strong opinion we will have a more conservative gov ernment and that many errors will be corrected dur ing the next four years. While the congress is still democratic by a close majority, it is no longer a rub- ber stamp, even among many democrats, and will be a better mouth piece of public opinion in the future. This is well, as the problems ahead are many and greater than have confronted any administration in our history. We know that there can be no one man govern ment and that congress will take a strong hand in helping meet the war and peace problems, and in re storing our economic system to a more sound basis. In this the people have spoken in no uncertain terms, and feel certain of respectful consideration. It is our job now to forget all the charges and counter charges of an embittered campaign and support the comple tion of the war and the making of safe terms of peace. These done, we can turn more vigorously to our national domestic affairs and a better adjustment of industry, agriculture, and labor questions, and a severe correction of bureaucratic government and the evils attending the restraint and regulation of big and small business. We have faith that this will be done and that the next four years will be more pros perous and successful in the free ways of our Ameri can life.
