S. Stoltnow of Condon. Mr. Stolt- now has been parts man for the International company at Condon prior to moving to Boardman. Mr. and Mrs. Gorham came to this region in 1908, settling first in Hermiston and in 1919 opening the store at Boardman. They have op erated the business in the same lo cation for the past 25 years. UMATILLA MAJOR GIVEN CLUSTER Major John A. Elterich, Umatil la, has been awarded the oak leaf cluster to the silver star for expe diting the movement of troops across a river on October 13, 1943, in the Mediterranean campaign. Despite close range machine- gun fire which wounded 20 of his men. Major Elterich directed the infantrymen, burdened with heavy equipment, to a path up the bank His action helped materially to reduce casualties, the war depart ment said. Ki RED & WHITE STORE Lawrence Hunt, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Hunt, has recently been commissioned a Second Lieuten ant. He recently graduated from the Army Air Forces Navigation school at San Marcos, Texas. Sec ond Lt. Hunt and his wife are now on a furlough to Chicago and then will be stationed somewhere in Nebraska. Mr. Hunt is a graduate of Hermiston schools, as is his wife, the former Miss Genevieve Blinston. ASPHALT ROOFING Mr. and Mrs. W. R Nugent of Umatilla were among those pres ent who greeted Thomas E. Dew ey, presidential candidate, when his party visited Portland last week. They attended a two-day convention and shook hands with Mr. and Mrs. Dewey at a banquet at the Multnomah Hotel one after noon. Both Mr. and Mrs. Nugent are quite enthusiastic about the republican presidential candidate. While in Portland Mrs. Nugent donated a pint of blood to the Red Cross and brings back a request from the Red Cross center request ing as many as possible from this area to donate blood for a needy cause. Also Fruit—Peaches, Prunes, Apples, etc. NUGENTS MEET THOMAS DEWEY Robert Wiley Culver, a guard at the Umatilla Ordnance Depot for the past several years, passed away last Thursday at the local hospital following a brief illness caused by a severe heart attack. Funeral services were held Sunday after noon at Prann's Funeral Parlors with Rev. Leland Morris in charge. Mr. Culver was born in Rome, Georgia. November 4. 1892. He came to the Yakima valley in Washington from the state of Ok lahoma 25 years ago He was mar ried to Miss Zelma Landrus Nov ember 15, 1923. To them were born two children, a son who died in infancy and a daughter, Fran ces, who resides at home. They came to Hermiston almost three years ago.
