THE HERMISTON HERALD HERMISTON OREGON THURSDAY, AUGUST 3, 1944 for the Union Pacific at Echo, was in- ducted into the army last week. Mrs. Schmidt will remain in Echo while her husband is in the service. Miss Josephine Grubaugh. from Nebraska, is acting as agent until a successor for Mr. Schmidt is appointed. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Smith returned Saturday from a 12 day vacation trip to Bellingham and other points in northern Washington where they vis ited realtives. They made the trip by bus, going through Portland and Seattle and back by way of Yakima and Pasco. During Mrs. Smith’s sence Mrs. Wm. Helmick acted as sistant in the local postoffice. Rob Meechan and Bob Ramos of Echo were called for pre-induction amination Monday, after enlisting in the navy. They both passed the phy- | sical examination and will return | home Thursday. On August 10th they will report at Camp Farragut to start | ECHO NEWS ITEMS The Mogul Transportation company has leased the Echo garage building from Joseph Cunha and is remodeling the building and installing equipment to operate as a service and repair station for the fleet of trucks operat ed by the company. A crew of seven men in charge of Wilbert Hawk is now employed and Mr. Hawk states that five more mechanics are urgently needed. The Mogul company operates a large fleet of tank trucks distribut- ing gas. lubricating, fuel and diesel oil throughout Oregon. Idaho, Wash- ington and part of Montana. There will be no storage at this station but it will be headquarters for service and repair work. The outfit moved here last week from Baker. Elmer H. Schmidt, station agent naval training. W. H. Crary returned Monday from a two weeks visit in Portland. Mrs. Crary will remain in the city until about the middle of August. Sloan Thomson. Butter Creek farm er. was taken to the Pendleton hospi tal Saturday suffering from pneumo nia. His condition was deemed criti cal but it was reported Tuesday that he was improving rapidly. Bob Pashek. who was station agent for the Union Pacific at Echo a few months ago. stopped here for a brief visit this week while on furlough. He is a technical corporal in a transpor tation unit of the army stationed at Grand Rapids, Mich., where his com pany is taking training on a govern ment operated division of the Penn sylvania railway. His job is train dis patching. He is due for the rank of technical sergeant this month and expects to be assigned to actual war duty overseas as soon as the European beachhead expands a little more. Painting of the Echo Methodist parsonage and church building was completed Monday. The painting was done by Earl B. Cotton with the as sistance of some colunteer workers. F. J. Irvine spent Tuesday trimming adjoining trees which obstructed a view of the newly painted church from the streets. A visitor at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. Black for a few days is Mrs. Black’s brother. Mr. and Mrs. I. Skoubo received a card from Ralph who is in a German prison camp. He states that he is well. Maxine Ely is at Ione helping her grandmother cook for harvest men. Elmer Stooksberry arrived Monday to pick melons. George Daniel picked a few. and he intends to open a melon stand in town the latter part of the week. Mrs. Leo Root has gone to Seattle for a two weeks vacation. Engi neers. They accompanied Paul Cas- sey. who went down on business. Glenn Ostrom spent Friday in Pen dleton on business. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hulsapple left Sunday for Portland where they will spend some time. Mrs. D. D. Cowan and daughter. Barbara. left Friday for Centralia. Wash., where she will visit with her mother. Rawls and son re turned Sunday from a week's vaca tion spent fishing and in Portland. Mr. and Mrs. Glenn O'Neill spent a week’s vacation in Seattle visiting friends. The Umatilla fire department and other men helped put out the grass fire which was on both sides of the highway between Irrigon and Uma tilla.
