Measure milk into cup; add shortening to fill. Dump milk, shortening, unbeaten egg, and flav oring into flour mixture. Beat with rotary beater 2 to 3 minutes, or until batter is smooth. Pour batter into well greased shallow square cake pan (8x8x2). Bake in moderate oven (375° F.) 30 minutes, or until done. Serve warm or cold, plain or with sauce. Serves 8. Cup Cakes, too, require surprisingly little time to prepare (summertime suggestions: serve them split and covered with crushed fresh fruit, or with frosting, or with powdered sugar).
