Behrman Slerrp 7MONG the things for which — — our boys are fighting is the right to celebrate Christmas in the traditional American way. It is with particular pride in our coun try's accomplishment in this direc- flea and with firm faith for the future that we send you now oar heartiest Christmas wishes. Brierley’s Variety Store By E. P. Dodd Christmas will be celebrated around the globe this year in actual fact and spirit more than any other Christmas during the history of the world. This wide ly spread celebration of the birth of the Savior, and the reasons for it, may mean a great and permanent extension of the spirit and principles of Christianity. God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform, and these years He is planting His footsteps on desert sands, in valleys, on great plains and across mountain ranges. He rides upon the storms of seven seas, and in the engulfing strathosphere. There is no earthly boundary in which His power, as exemplified by the faith and tenents of Christianity, is not felt. Christmas is for the Christ. Christ taught freedom of the mind, body and soul, and the kindly relations of mankind—one to another. These are the reasons why our boys are called upon to encircle the globe. In humility and with decent respect to our conscience we should admit that we are not carrying the gospel to all the world for its own glorification. Being a peace loving nation we were forced into this war for liberty and the brotherhood of man, and may be ac cused of selfishness in the defense of the institutions we love, which have made us the greatest democracy on earth. But we do have the right to claim that it is the gospel of the Risen Lord, as demonstrated in our government and ways of life that we are fighting for, and are doing so with a glorified vision of the sacred rights of men as taught by the Man of Galli- lee. Though not referring to a celebrated volume we have found that this is a one world, or rather, one world is finding us. The chains of Christian nations are being linked together. The reservoir of good will of many nations is in fact being filled from the spirit of humanity in this country, where freedom is more than a government symbol and serfdom and ag- gression are not in the vocabulary of our Book of Books. How well we will have done our duty will be determined by the peace terms, the duration of which will depend on the incorporation of the principles of the Prince of Peace. When we struck out on this mission Russia had previously denied its people the privileges of relig- ous observances. This has been changed, and Christ mas bells will ring in all its churches. The philsophy of Confucious is being enlightened by the spirit of Christianity in China. In the South Sea islands where our boys may celebrate Christmas one hour and fight the next, the natives may ask what is this Christmas, and our boys may say it is the spirit of the Lord and nation that is with them in fox holes and jungles. Moslemism, Hinduism, Buddhism and paganism, coming in contact with the soldiers of a Christian world may marvel at their power in battle and their kindness and benevolence behind the lines in hospi talization, and to conquered enemies. These peoples may wonder whence comes the greatness of our country, our armies, navies, and air fleets, and men and women. In their wonderment they may be awakened and learn what democracy really means, and what the birth of Christ signifies. We know that the beautiful strains of Silent Night will be heard in ever widening volume around the globe this Christmas time, and will lift men’s souls from serf dom to cruel masters, adverse environment and the darkness of mystery, cult, and paganistic beliefs. What might have been accomplished by mission aries, commerce and treaties in peaceful progress of the world, may be brought about by the terrible swift sword. We may rejoice that at this Christmas tide we can be assured of the defeat of the enemies of Christian civilization. The intensities of life try men’s souls and make men think. Out of a strife, the like of which humanity has never suffered, may we retain our hopes and faith in the righteousness of things to come. and You and YOU all the good things that 1944 can possibly bring.
