PAGE FOUR HERMISTON HERALD HERMISTON. OREGON. Published Every Thursday at Hermiston, Umatilla County, Oregon. Alfred Quiring and Leander Quiring, Publishers. Entered at the post office at Hermiston as Second Class Matter, Dec. 1906, Umatilla County, Oregon. Subscription Rates One Year.................................. $2.00 Six Months ............................... 1.00 Payable in Advance Office Telephone .... 2051 Residence Telephone 2333 Aemben O reg Chamber of Commerce Data While not proposing to out-do the Liars’ Club in Portland which claims that beans climb electric line poles, and produce so heavily that two linemen are required to pick the beans, and that cucumber vines grow so fast that the traps must be set to catch the cukes, we venture to tell the truth about things in this locality. We know of peaches here so large that one will provide dessert for a family of six. Watermelons in the Irrigon area are already so large that the grower expects to use derricks to load them on a truck, and one grower will give a party when he expects a half dozen melons will fill up 300 people with the melon appetite of a southern negro. Another grower ex pects to harvest the seeds and split them for sails on boats on the Columbia. Some people are buying one potato for a meal for a family of seven. We know of one morning glory seed that has covered the entire front of a house, and Mrs. Udey has enough flowers on a quarter of an acre to decorate every store front in town. Alfalfa on some ranches on Butter Creek has to be cut in half swaths and untangled from ad joining vines before a tractor can repeat the round, and additional land is being leased or bought on which to stack hay. This is enough for one time lest someone may get the idea that we are bragging. The Umatilla Rapids dam is again at the forefront for construction, either soon, or at the farthest, for. post war development and employment. Bonneville is short of water and Grand Coulee cannot release enough to meet the emergency. New storage dams are needed, but these cannot be brought into service before 1945 and 1946, even if Idaho and Montana permit the installations. Engineers are at work again but utmost secrecy prevails. No one knows whether they are there by usual order, or whether the Han ford-Dupont program is rechecking. A special hear ing is to be held before a congressional committee and the public wishes of this interior region will be set forth. After all the peoples affected have a great voice in the development of the region. If their de mands are made strong enough, they will be heard in Washington, particularly as next year is a political year.
