Crary Mrs. Tena Weltzin has received word from her son Willard, that he is now attending a mechanics school at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Willard left here December 29 and went to Salt Lake City, from where he was transferred to Fort Knox. He is in the army armored division, and likes army life but does not care much for the Kentucky climate. A number of Echo women met at the home of Mrs. G. H. Frederick i Tuesday evening to make pillows for I the Red Cross. Miss Violet Denny and Mr. and ! Mrs. George Cook of Portland re turned home Monday after attending the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. John Denny. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Lane of Pen- i dleton spent Sunday at the home of Mrs. Tena Weltzin, east of Echo. Clyde M. Berry, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Berry of Echo, has re ceived word that he passed his exami nation for enlistment in the navy and will be called soon to start training as a radio technician at a navy school. He will be given a rating of 3rd class petty officer. Averell V Meyers, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Meyers of Echo, has won his wings as a flyer after completing elementary training in the air at the LaG rande field. He has yet to take some ground training after which he expects to be assigned to army trans port flying. He was here over the week end for a visit with his parents. Twenty-five members and invited guests attended a pot luck dinner and business meeting of Echo Garden club at the home of Mrs. M. E. Larive Wednesday evening. Mrs. W. J. Hel mick, club president, reported on a Victory Garden meeting in Pendleton, and the members were enthusiastic about starting gardens here this year. Mrs. Carl Weltzin gave a report on the day room at Pendleton Field, which was furnished by Umatilla, Hermiston and Echo people. Mrs. Weltzin and Mrs. Helmick assisted Mrs. F. B. Belt and Mrs. Thomas O’ Grady in arranging furnishings for the room. The matter of making small pillows for the Red Cross was presented by Mrs. Crary and a meeting has been called for Tuesday evening at the home of Mrs. G. H. Frederick to work on this project. Plans were made for the Garden club to take part in a war bond selling campaign which is being sponsored by Mrs. Hawley Bean, and a contribution of $5.00 was voted for the Red Cross drive. The next meeting of the club will be held at the home of Mrs. C. H. Es- selstyn, when election of officers will be held. PILGRIM HOLINESS CHVRCH J. W. Stuart.
