ECHO NEWS ITEMS w. j, FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF HERMISTON 1 WELFARE OF OUR TOWN Public spirit, which is developed and sustained by the activities of a good commercial club, is the most important factor in the life of a community. Any town with interest in its public welfare at a low ebb is non progressive, lifeless and on its way out. It is destined to lose its best citizenship, its volume of business, its love of good homes and its facilities for modern and stable life. It makes no plans for betterments and develops selfishness, lack of pride, and suffers loss in the amenities that make living worthwhile. Civic organizations all arise and thrive through the united spirit of good citizenship. This is par ticularly true under a democratic form of govern ment which we are now giving our all to maintain. Democracy in government is just a part of that doc trine in sustaining the welfare of local nieghbors and friends. The commercial club, in growing stronger, is re newed assurance that the spirit of interest in the community is growing stronger. The business men realize fully that there is plenty to do in this grow ing town, and are willing to give themselves to the tasks ahead. They deserve the support of every bus iness interest, property holder and home owner. Not only should the club be supported by a. large mem bership, and attendance at meetings, but in the pro grams offered. This is no place and no time to lay off and let George do it. Nor is it the right thing to do to crit icize what is not done without doing something your self. To conduct a business and take the gravy while others bring the business to your door is extremely selfish and the mark of the poorest citizenship. It is true that there are always a few, of course, who yip and holler if things are quiet, but who never give a second or a dime to keep the business rolling in. They seem to think that a community exists merely for their own profitable existence. Thank heaven, we have very few of the grouch element in this community. By building up a strong public spirit in the wel fare of all, the many things the town needs will soon be accomplished. We can make ourselves more proud of the appearance of the town, its successes in business, its resources, and its desirability as a place for more permanent and better homes, and the high est grade of citizenship.
