VICTORY BOOK CAMPAIGN ON Mrs. Roy Tiller, chairman of the Victory book campaign in this area, this week launched an active cam paign to gather as many books as possible for the boys in the service. The purpose of the victory book cam paign is to provide books—good books, both as to physical condition and readability—for the increasing millions of our fighting men, soldiers, sailors, marines, coast guardsmen, merchant seamen, wherever they may be. "Any book you really want to keep is a good one to give.” Remember, the fighting man of today is still your neighbor of yesterday and to- morrow. He likes to read the same books that every American, man or woman, likes to read. Specifically, current best sellers and the more re cently published (1930 to date) popu lar fiction and non-fiction; adventure and western, detective and mystery fiction; technical books published since 1935. A number of local organizations are purchasing one or more new books for the collection. Boxes have been placed in various stores, at the Ration Board headquarters and at the libra ry. Cooperation in this another war effort will be greatly appreciated. ROBERT PIERSON HOME ON VISIT Second Lieutenant Robert Pierson, son of Mr. and Mrs. K. D. Pierson, came last week end to spend several days in Hermiston with his parents and friends. Bob received his wings on November 25, 1942. at Roswell, New Mexico, and since then has been stationed at Topeka. Kansas, where he has been undergoing special train ing for combat duty. Bob Follett,' son of Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Follett, al so received his wings at Roswell. Second Lt. Pierson has averaged 12 hours in the air for the past sev eral months, weather permitting, and has filled the position of co-pilot. He expects an over-seas assignment im mediately upon his return to Topeka, probably going to either England or Australia. He left for his post to day (Thursday). Among Hermiston youths who are now sporting wings in the air corps include: Bob Pierson, Ted Ripley, Ralph Marble. Bernard Jendrzejew ski and probably one or two others.
