Crary Harle Rogers, son of Mrs. Grace | Rogers of the Meadows, spent a three day furlough at his mother’s home. | He is a technical sergeant in the ar- ! my stationed at Ft. Greeley, Colo. Echo Masonic lodge will have work in the Master Mason degree at a meeting to be held December 22. Mayor C. H. Esselstyn is recover ing from an operation for varicose veins performed last Thursday at Pendleton. He is able to be at the store although still slightly lame as a result of the operation. Echo school will have a shorter va cation than usual for the holiday sea son. School will close December 23 after a Christmas program at the city hall and will reopen Monday, December 28. A one day vacation will be allowed on New Years day. Ordinarily two weeks have been al lowed for the midwinter vacation. Charles Cunha, who has been visit ing here for the past week, left Mon day night for San Francisco where he will spend a few days with his wife before returning to his station in South America. He is a sergeant in the air corps. Bill Erskine of Ketchikan. Alaska, a nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Troy Cole man. left Sunday to return to Alaska where he will enter the coast guard ile came here by plane from Seattle and has been visiting at the Colemans for several days. O. F. Bartholomew returned Fri day from Emmett. Idaho, bringing a government auto with him and went on to Corvallis to report for duty in the bureau of plant industry. His wife and daughter are staying at the C. H. Bartholomew home on Butter Creek until O. F. Bartholomew can return and take them to Corvallis where they will spend the winter. The Echo Cougars took their first scheduled basketball game of the sea son at Irrigon 37 to 18. Boardman is scheduled at Echo Friday and this should be a fast game as the teams are rated about even. In the Irrigon contest the score was 22 to 5 at the half and Echo played all of its men in the last half. W. Brommell was high scorer with 12. Echo’s string includes W. Brommell, Dallman, Reese and J. Correa, forwards; Lu ciani and Penney, centers; Bill Cor rea, Robertson. Esselstyn and Meech- an, guards. C. B. Greene, driver of the west side school bus, has been ill the past week and his son Willie, came from Pendleton to operate the bus while his father was confined to his home. Mr. Greene resumed work Monday morning.______ _ PINE CITY NEWS Ry Mra. Ramie« Wattenburger Mrs. C. H. Bartholomew is staying in Pendleton a few days with her grandson, Jerry Myers, who has had a major operation. Jerry is hoping to get to come home for Christmas. Jasper Myers and Burl Wattenbur- ger had to report in Heppner Monday at ten o’clock at the court house to serve on the jury. Mr. and Mrs. James Daley and son Charley spent Monday in Pendle ton on business. E. B. Wattenburger and children spent Saturday in Pendleton on busi ness. The children called on Jerry Myers while in the city. Mrs. E. B. Wattenburger was hos tess to a card party Saturday at the Russell Moore home. Three tables were in play. High score went to Fay Finch and Clayton Ayers, and low to Patty Finch and D. Adams. Lunch was served at midnight. Mr and Mrs John Healy got a letter this week from their son Jack in the navy that he is well but would like to be home for Christmas. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Ayers and daugh ter of Hermiston spent Sunday even ing at the Clayton Ayers home. Mrs. Anna O. Thompson spent the week end in Heppner on business. Mr. and Mrs. Charley Morehead and famly and Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Avers and daughter spent Saturday afternoon in Heppner. Malcolm O’Brien left Friday even- i ing for Portland. He has joined the I navy. Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Wattenburger spent Saturday in Pasco on business. They visited their son Earl and fam ily while in the city. The grade pupils are giving their Christmas program Wednesday even ing, December 23, at 8:00 o’clock. Everyone is invited. MISSIONARY RAPT I ST CHURCH E. M.
