OREGON Your RED& WHITE COUNTY AAA TO MAKE CHECK ON FARM PROGRAM Store "Food-for-Freedom" production on Umatilla county- farms and their participation in the 1942 agricultur al conservation program is being sur veyed in the annual AAA compliance check now underway throughout the county, announces A. R. Coppock, chairman of the county AAA com mittee. To conserve rubber and manpower needed in agriculture and vital de fense industries, a farm-to-farm can vass and acreage measurement such as has been conducted in the past, will not be made this year. Instead, we expect to do the major portion of our supervision from the county office. The farmers will be notified of the time to appear at the county office and the supervisor and farmer together will fill out the necessary reports of performance. We have tried this on a few farmers this spring and believe that in most cases it will be very satisfactory. Of course, there will still have to be some country supervision such as checking protected fallow, green manure crops, clean cultivation of perennial noxious weeds, etc. It will, also, be necessary for the county of fice to recheck a percentage of all farms since the state representatives will make a similar survey, and we want to be sure that our supervision is satisfactory. We have already made a complete check-up on wheat acreage and are mostly interested in ¡ the soil conservation phase of the program. This year's compliance check is more than a determination of parti cipation in the farm program. In a sense it amounts to an inventory of the county’s capacity for production of the foods needed to win the war, Mr. Coppock said in announcing the | new plan. Information obtained will be invaluable in planning our contri bution to the larder of America and our allies in 1943. The hearty coop eration of farmers in helping obtain this information will be a definite contribution to the county’s war ef fort. The provisions of the agricultural conservation program have been modified in order to encourage the maximum production of needed farm commodities and at the same time I conserve soil resources for top pro duction throughout the war emergen- j cy and in the years to come. The county office of the Agricul-1 turai Adjustment Agency at 329 S. W. First St., Pendleton, is now pre pared to sell wheat owned by Com modity Credit Corporation, to feed- | ers of livestock or poultry, wheat stored at the following stations: Mil ton, Athena, Pendleton and Weston. Applicants for light shore duty in the marine reserve must be between 30 and 51 years in- elusive, physically sound, with vis- ion not lower than 8 20 without glas- ses corrected to 18 20 with glasses. In addition to regular line pay. I clothing, quarters and subsistence for I themselves, all class IV reservists who are married and maintaining a home will receive $1.15 per day quar- iters allowance, which begins upon I entrance into service.
