SWAYZE, President Member Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation COLUMBIA NEWS By Mrs. Bob Woodward The State Federation of the Farm Bureau were hosts Tuesday evening to about 100 guests at a dinner in the Columbia club rooms. Charles Baker of Walla Walla had previous ly been announced as main speaker of the evening, but being unable to attend. Leslie L. Stewart, manager of the Walla Walla Farm Bureau gave the principal talk. Other in teresting speakers of the evening were Roy Ritner of Pendleton, secre tary of the County Farm Bureau; Sam Yates of Milton, president of the County Farm Bureau: Sam Ing les of Milton and Don Cameron of Pilot Rock, managers of the organi- zation in their respective districts. The Home Extension unit met Tuesday afternoon at the U.S.O. building in Hermiston. The topic “Household Repairs” was led by Mrs. H. M. Sommerer and Mrs. A. H. Cable. The executive committee of the North Columbia Telephone line held a meeting Monday evening at the Charles Keller home. Arrangements were made to get experienced help in locating the trouble which has been interrupting service on the line for the past several weeks. Mrs. A. H. Cable was hostess last Saturday afternoon at a party hon oring the fifth birthday anniversary of her daughter Doreen. Guests were Phyllis Wilson, Doris Dufur, Donita and LaVonne Dixson, Rita Blinston, Paula Bracher, Sue Sommerer, Mavis Emmons, Beverly Jo and Carolyn Woodward. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Waller of Pros ser and Mr. and Mrs. Oron Felthouse were Sunday guests at the Joe Udey home. F. Chrisman of Pendleton has rented the Townsend hall for danc ing. The club has retained the use of the hall on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month for their regular meetings. Mrs. Percy Corman went to Pen dleton Tuesday to be with her sister who has just returned home from the hospital. Percy Corman has rented his place to Jim Allen and has gone to Moro where he will be employed on ware house construction work. The Gill house, recently purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Udey, has been wired for electricity. The Snyder family have rented it and will move there about the first of the month from the lower Barager place which has been sold to Mr. and Mrs. Har- old Keller. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lenz and Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Lenz were in Pendle- ton Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Nat Davis are new residents of the district, having moved recently to the Charles Keller place. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Garberding made a business trip to Pilot Rock on Tuesday afternoon and spent the evening in Pendleton. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hammer re turned home Wednesday of last week from Susanville, Cal., where they have been employed. Mrs. Charles Powell left Wednes day for her home in Portland after visiting several days at the home of her sister-in-law. Mrs. Duff Knight. Mrs. Gretchen Purdy, who has been in Portland is now visiting at the Duff Knight home. Carl Hammer made a business trip to Pendleton and Walla Walla Monday. Harold Fox of Milton visited Mon day at the home of his aunt, Mrs. Lester Hammer. Mrs. Doris Getchell left Tuesday evening to visit her sister at White Salmon, Wn. Mr. and Mrs. Myrnie Caldwell drove to Arlington Thursday even ing of last week to visit his father, C. J. Caldwell. Mr. and Mrs. James Getchell were moving Wednesday to the farm they recently purchased from Wm. Eng- lish. Verne Dunham was a Tuesday night guest at the Garberding home, Dunham, who has been stationed in Pendleton on soil conservation work was to leave there this week end to return to his farm home at Elgin. Jimmie works on the railroad. Mrs. F. B. Stuart was an honor guest at the Tuesday night meeting of the Grange. She and Mrs. L. L. Wurtz left Wednesday for Portland. Wm. Krause has bought the F. B. Stuart home and is redecorating it. Several Stanfield people attended the funeral of Mrs. John Schmidt Sr. in Pendleton Wednesday afternoon. She had resided on the farm west of town since 1919 and leaves her hus band and son John. Mrs. Max Pigar will present a full chorus of high school girls in the Easter cantata at the eleven o’clock service April 5 at the Presbyterian church. The cantata is called “Eter- nal Life”. Mrs. F. B. Stuart was a dinner guest at the N. D. Bard hame Satur day night and several bridge club members came. A farewell gift was presented. Officers for the year 1942-43 for the Presbyterian Ladies Aid were elected on March 19 as follows: pres ident, Rose Hedrick: first vice pres ident, Mrs. C. C. Rhea: second vice president, Mrs. Hada Shelton: secre tary, Mrs. Roy G. Penney: sewing directress, Mrs. J. F. Rueber; finan cial chairman, Mrs. William Reeves: treasurer, Miss Lennä Waid. A so cial hour followed with Mrs. F. B. Stuart and Mrs. L. L. Wurtz as hon ored guests. Mesdames Rhea and Sturdivant served refreshments. Mrs. J. F. Rueber and Mrs. Hedrick are the supper committee for March 30. Following the election on March 19 of the Ladies Aid, Mrs. Rose Hed rick has named the following commit tees for this year: visiting commit tee, Mrs. Sturdivant, Mrs. Elliott and Miss Berry: social committee, Mrs. McCormick, Mrs. Greathouse and Mrs. Miller: mother’s committee, Mrs Pigar and Mrs. Lane: mission ary committee, Mrs. Mabel Richards: social secretary, Mrs. J. F. Rueber; financial chairman, Mrs. William Reeves, who names her own commit tee of four.
