THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1942 INCOME TAX LESS FOR FARMERS WHO HAVE GOOD BOOKS With the lowering of federal in come tax exemptions, more Oregon farmers than ever before are realiz ing that farm records are not only desirable as a business help but are well nigh indispensable in connection with the state and federal income tax systems, says Dr. G. W. Kuhlman, associate professor of farm manage ment at Oregon State college. On the basis of the 1940 census re port of farm income alone, it is es timated that approximately half of the farmers in Oregon are required to make income tax reports for 1941 The new revenue act requires filing a return by the head of every family with a gross income of $1500 or more, or $750 in the case of a single person. Many farm operators have supple mental income in addition to that from farm sales, which must be con sidered. Dr. Kuhlman emphasizes the fact that a return must be filed on the basis of gross income, regard less of whether deductions are suffi- cient to eliminate an actual tax. Farmers who have been keeping books are finding that their financial records keep their income tax bur den to a minimum by allowing them to take advantage of the inventory rather than mere cash basis returns each year. For example, two dairy- men in partnership, with gross sales of from $10,000 to $16,000 per year have been paying little tax because expenses in building up their busi ness have largely balanced their in come. Now, faced with a lease ex piration and the dissolving of the partnership, they will be subject to a far heavier tax than if they had paid each year as their inventory was built up. Another example cited by Dr. Kuhlman is a wheat farmer who has been following the cash basis of re porting and cannot consider wheat under loan as a sale, hence may be ** you save more money for import ant defense needs.
