NEW TAXES ADDED
BY REVENUE ACT
J. W. Maloney, Collector of Inter
nal Revenue, called attention today
to the fact that the Revenue Act of
1941 imposed a number of new taxes,
which became effective October 1,
that will affect thousands of taxpay
ers who were not heretofore liable for
taxes.
Mr. Maloney stated that the tax of
I 10 per cent, imposed on retail sales
of jewelry, toilet preparations, and
furs, became effective October 1, and
that these taxes would affect many
dealers who were ordinarily not class
ed as jewelers, druggists, or fur deal

Mr. and Mrs. George Wicklander
visited Thursday afternoon with Mrs.

The mid-week prayer meeting of
the Presbyterian church was held
in the Messenger home.
Drew Hereim of Colorado, but for
merly of Boardman, spent a few days
on the project. He expressed much
pleasure in meeting the old time
friends. He moved to Colorado ten
years ago. He was on his way home
from Anchorage, Alaska, where he
spent the last three months.

Unemployment Compensation Com
mission were announced today by
Professor William Griffith, supervis
or for the Board of Examiners.
Six classifications with starting
pay from $80 to $120 a month are
listed in the announcement. The posi
tions include junior and senior clerk
typists, junior and senior clerk-sten
ographers, key punch operator and
junior tabulating machine operator.
Although educational and experi
ence requirements vary, high school
graduation and some training or job
performance, in the main, are neces
sary to gain admittance to the exam
inations.
Because of increased demands from
defense industries for office help,
many of last year’s merit lists al
ready have been exhaused. Appoint
ments from the new lists will follow
closely upon completion of the tests,
it is expected.
Complete information and applica
tion blanks may be obtained from the
23 local offices of the state employ
ment service or from the Portland of
fice, 701 Spalding Building, of the
Board of Examiners, where all appli
cations must be forwarded before No
vember 10. Examination centers will
be selected from Portland, Salem,
Klamath Falls, Eugene. Medford, On
tario, Bend, Pendleton and Marsh
field.
