MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG As we roll along on the new diag onal road to the Ordnance Depot, we are prone to forget the effort made to secure its construction. Already we scarcely recall the washboard sur face, rocks and dust and car wreck ing conditions prevailing such a short time ago. But lest we forget too soon and not take lesson therefrom, let’s re cord here that this same beautiful, smooth surface allayed almost a na tional disgrace. For nearly four months 2500 cars of workers on a national defense project, pounded their way each day to the field of duty at a damaging cost of not less than a quarter of a million dollars. During that time these workers paid the state not less than $40,000 in gas taxes, and the road cost less than half the sum. The road was laid out early last April. Money was appropriated by Congress to build it. But delay fol lowed. Then followed efforts of local citizens, county, state and govern ment officials to get quick action. Numerous wires were sent to Wash ington, and to the governor, WPA heads, U. S. Senators and Congress men, and the matter grew into a hot subject. Finally red tape and bureau entanglements were broken down, and finally then a contract was let and the road built in two weeks time. To go into all the details might hurt someone, somewhere, which is not the object of this little review. The point we wish to make is main ly that we should not let such a thing happen again. We may soon need other such roads, and with this past experience kept in our minds, we are warned not to sleep one day on the job, or allow anyone else to dilly daily in his duty. STANFIELD NEWS By Mrs. Rose Hedrick J. H. Kruse is fast getting his large building formerly known as the Brown Garage ready for occupancy. Three apartments are let and Dr. E. Wilcutt has his office there; Happy Jack who has maintained George’s Cafe on Coe Avenue will move soon to new quarters in the Kruse build ing. There will also be a Gamble store. Rev. B. F. Mitchell attended the Presbytery at Pilot Rock on Tues day. s I . - ■■ Yog CAN BURN ANOTHER BETTER SIGHT LAMP 4 HOURS FOR 1 CENT for electricity here is cbeaf! in the average home Why risk straining your precious eyes just because others are using the one good lamp? PP&L has made electricity so cheap every home can afford plenty of light by each chair where people read, study or sew. Stop in at the stores tomorrow and see the displays of smart new 1942 lamps. But be sure you select an I.E.S. model, for only these better-sight lamps have translucent bowls to filter out harmful glar: and make seeing easy and safe. And when you have enough lamps, don’t neglect to use them— sight is priceless—light is cheap. Well, we’re not making any extravagant statements like that about our John Deere Tractors, but we do know that you can pivot a John Deere Tractor within its own length—it’s done by means of the in dividual rear wheel brakes—and, say, does that save you time at the row ends. You have both hands free to operate the steering wheel all the time—all you do is press down on the foot brake, twist the steering wheel, and you’re ready to go down the next row—it’s great, too, for holding the tractor on sidehill work.
