THURSDAY, IRRIGON NEWS ITEMS BOARDMAN NEWS By Elaine Fisher By Mrs. W. C. Isom Melvin Benefiel and sister, Mrs. Edith Puckett, and Mrs. Ivan Woods motored to Walla Walla Wednesday. Rev. Harness left Saturday for Latah, Wn., where he will hold a two weeks series of meetings a t the Pen tecostal church. Wayne Fagerstrom will have charge of the services here during his absence. Lucile Jones and Echo Aldrich at tended the music festival at La Grande Friday. Mr. Hatfield was a Condon visitor Saturday. Miss Seidl and Miss Casteel spent the week end at thpir homes in Port land. Wesley Haney, a farm er living west of Irrigon, died suddenly from a heart attack Friday. Funeral ser vices were held at Pendleton Monday. A large brooder house and 500 turkey poults on the Robert Smith place were destroyed by fire last Wednesday. The cause of the fire is not known. A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith at the St. Antho ny’s hospital in Pendleton Friday, April 25. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Isom visited Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Powers near Hermiston Sunday. Miss Culp had her father from La Grande as a house guest last week. PAGB THRU» THE HERMISTON HERALD. HERMISTON. OREGON MAY 1, 1941. The softball team played a game with Arlington Monday afternoon with a score of 17 to 6 in favor of Boardman. Arlington will come here Monday afternoon, May 5 for a re turn game. There will be a prayer meeting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Berger Wednesday afternoon. The high school girls pleasantly surprised their teacher and adviser, Miss Peyralins with a handkerchief shower Monday afternoon. Dainty refreshments were served. The oc casion was her birthday. A P.T.A. meeting was held in the high school auditorium Thursday evening. Miss Myrthena Martin gave an interesting discussion on the work and methods used in teaching the primary grades. Mr. Corwin also gave an address ably defending the educators of today against an attack which came out in a well known mag azine some time back. The local track team attended the track meet at Condon Saturday and came home with third honors. Mr. and Mrs. Macomber of Hepp ner visited relatives here Sunday. This school expects to attend the May day festival at Heppner Friday. In common with other communities this project is being put on a 10 day water schedule. Miss Myrthena Martin went to Portland over the week end and while there came down with the measles. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Root and her mother, and Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Root will leave for a vacation trip Saturday. They expect to visit the Grand Coulee dam._________ STANFIELD NEWS By Mr». Rose Hedrick The Monday bridge club was en tertained at the home of Mrs. Adolph Heyden this week. Mrs. R. A. Mc Lain became a member. There were five substitute players, Mrs. Troyer, Mrs. Temple, Mrs. E lliott. Mrs. Gre gory and Mrs. Fisk. Mrs. Howard Herrick of Portland is enjoying a two weeks vacation at the home of her mother, Mrs. Mary Nudo, and Mrs. Charles Herrick. Miss Lois Messenger spent the week end attending the state C. E. convention at Klamath Falls. Mrs. Troy Coleman extends an in vitation to all ladies as Mrs. J. K. Griffiths will address the Ladies Aid on Thursday. Rev. Mitchell of Seattle will occu py the pulpit at the Presbyterian church Sunday night. May 4. The Stanfield Woman’s Study club met at the home of Mrs. Inez Mc Cormick on April 24 with Mrs. E ra Green, vice president, presiding. The meeting was again opened with the pledge to the flag and all sang God Bless America. Two amendments were read. Mrs. Lucian Jouannault gave a wonderful paper on the Unit ed States foreign relations. Eleven members and two guests were pres ent. Eleven members also attended the fifth district Institute held the day before at Weston and brought back splendid reports. Mrs. Green, Mrs. Hogg, Mrs. Herrick, Mrs. Rhea, Mrs. McCormick, and Mrs. Fisk all reported on various phases. The last meeting will be held at the church on May 8 with a musical program. On the evening of April 25, more than 25 different families were rep resented at the Hermiston Methodist church and were more than pleased to hear the fine music sung by the A Capella choir from Pacific univer sity. Those enjoying some of the singers in their home were Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Baker, Mr. and Mrs. E r nest Greathouse, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Herrick, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Clark, Mr. and Mrs. Don Childs, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Seeley, Mr. and Mrs. George Sale and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Isack- son. Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Hudeman o f Adams have purchased the Boh Rueber farm and have take posses sion. Mrs. William Reeves is at Weiser, Idaho, because of the serious illness of her brother, A rthur Pennock. Mrs. Alice Maskelyne and grand daughter Betty Gene Gardner stopped and visited in Walla Walla over the week end. Lloyd Russell has begun building a two-story 32 ft. by 22 ft. house and Homebuilding garage on his farm northeast of Stanfield. McLain of the ammunition depot entertained as their dinner guests last Friday evening, Captain and Mrs. James M. Piercy and sister-in- law of Colorado who recently arrived in Oregon. Capt. Piercy and wife came here from Washington, D.C., and is in command of the Umatilla Ordnance Depot. Mr. and Mrs. K. W. Nash and fam ily, account of the J. A. Terteling company, have established their home in the Billups house near the Coe ranch. N. D. Bard, agent of the Union Pacific railroad, reports considerable increase in freight to Ordnance, Ore gon, caused by the construction pro gram at the ammunition depot.
