This question has been asked of us many times in the past month. It seems that the housing situ ation in this fair city is getting more acute as time goes on. With the many new developments going on in Hermiston and in neighboring towns it is nec essary that more houses be obtained to take care of the added inhabitants. What steps can be taken to relieve the situation is beyond our knowledge. However, it is getting to be an old story that there are no vacant houses here and Hermiston is bound to lose many new citizens unless something is done in the near future. It Pays To Play Safe A total of 328 lives were claimed in Oregon due to traffic accidents in 1938—a huge sum, yet a de crease of nine per cent over 1937 when 361 deaths occurred. This decrease is not just chance or a law of averages but is the result of a definite prevention program sponsored by Earl Snell, secretary of state, and his co-workers. This reduction in lives lost is the result of hard efficient work, that has grown out of the state-wide program which was launched approximately two years ago and has finally begun to bear fruit. Var ious means have been taken to educate the driving public in ways and means to cut down accidents. Press stories have been published, school children have been taught, better highways have been built, and honest law enforcement under modern highway codes have left an impression on autoists that safety pays. Accidents cost lives, money and unhappiness— safe driving costs nothing. Let’s all play safe. an d th e follo w in g g ra n d c h ild re n of H ia tt hom e for som e tim e. Mr. an d Mrs. O.
