Dean of the experiment sta tion gave statistics on butterfat pro duction as found from records com piled at the station during the 305 day lactation period. The feed for mula used during this time wag 400 pounds mill run, 200 pounds ground barley and 100 pounds ground oats. Mr. Dean stated that production cost is determined by the relative price of butterfat per pound, and the cost of hay and grain. The ex periments were carried on by feed ing hay alone to one group of cows, and feeding hay and grain to an other group. In the hay alone group each cow produced 26.6 lbs. butter fat and consumed 29 lbs. of hay per day. The cow fed hay and grain produced 32.2 lbs. butterfat and consumed 26.9 lbs. of hay and 4.5 lbs. grain. The hay alone group con sumed 36.7 lbs. hay to produce a pound of butterfat, and the hay and grain group consumed 27.9 lbs. hay and 4.6 lbs. grain to produce a pound of butterfat. Mr. Dean stated that the margin over feed cost received for butterfat in 1937 was 27 cents, based upon hay at 28 a ton and grain at 225 a ton. The return per cow over feed cost was 220.61, figured for 365 days. In order to make grain feed ing more profitable than feeding hay alone, Mr. Dean stated, the re turns must exceed 24.78 cents per pound of butterfat. The information given by Mr. Dean will be contained in a bulletin issued by the Oregon Experiment Station within the next six months. New Manageneat!
