C heetahs have been used for cen­
turies by oriental princes to run
down gam e, as m edieval kings used
falcons to hunt birds and sm all ani­
m als.
The sport is so old th a t nobody
knows w here or when it began. It
is believed to have spread from
E gypt to P ersia and la te r to India,
w here ch eetah s lived wild in the
jungles.
F rom Kenya colony, E a st Africa,
Indian princes o rd ered fresh sup­
plies of wild ch eetah s, and B ritish
se ttle rs m ade a business of catching
them for sale to m a h araja h s.
Although they a re th e fastest ani­
m als in the world for sh o rt dis­
tances, w rites Sam B rew er in the
Chicago Tribune, ch eetah s lack
stam ina and cannot go far. H unt­
ers ride them down on horseback
and say th at a ch eetah can rarely
keep ahead of a good horse for m ore
than a mile. Once tire d out, they
a re roped and taken aw ay for tra in ­
ing.
They look m uch like leopards, but
they a re gentle and easily ta m e d ;
and, above all, they nev er turn on
a m an, as leopards and other ca ts
are likely to do, a fte r they have been
tam ed.
F or all th eir looks, ch eetah s are
not classed with o th e r m em b ers of
the cat fam ily. They are in a spe­
cial group known to scien tists as
the ju b atu s. T heir legs a re longer
and th eir bodies lighter th an in cats.
T heir paw s and claw s a re doglike,
and they cannot pull the claw s en ­
tirely out of sight as can cats.
They p u rr like ca ts, but when they
lick your hand it is like being licked
by a b arbed w ire fence instead of
the san d p ap er effect of a c a t’s
tongue.
They a re tim id and easily frig h t­
ened a t first; then th ey becom e dog­
like in th e ir affection.

from m ost birds. This is called a
pea com b and is ra th e r a low com b
consisting of th ree rid g es instead of
a rose com b or a single com b.
B rah m as a re very la rg e, th eir
w eights being: Cock, 12 pounds;
hen, 9'/4 pounds; cockerels, 10
pounds; pullets, 8 pounds.

is very ch a ra c te ristic , being broad,
with heavy brow s giving the bird a
look of g re a t intelligence.
As a table fowl it is unexcelled
in the very heavy class, and it is
used pure and with cro sses very
extensively. In New E ngland the
bird had an ex trem ely wide popu­
la rity , especially in the hands of
sp ecialists in Rhode Island, who
turned out w hat w as called the New
E ngland soft ro aste r.
B rah m as a re h ardy, vigorous and
excellent lay ers of very larg e d ark
brown eggs. The fact th a t they
have been bred by m any of our
very best b reed ers is evidence of
th eir rea l w orth.
The B rah m a com es in a color oth­
e r than light. Then it is called the
D ark B rah m a. The m ales having a
black body, black wing b a r and
w hite saddle and hackle laced with
black. The fem ale is steel g ray ,
with each fea th er penciled with
black.
