As in o th e r years th e scheduled events of th e Pendleton Round-U p w ere presented as the hands of th e clock pointed th e hour in a m an ner com plim entary to the tophands p u ttin g on th e perform ance and as a trib u te to the men who plan and present one of the tru ly w estern shows of th e world. The perform ance of th e tophands in the calf roping, bronco riding, steer roping, bulldogging, Bram a steer rid in g , excelled ealch day of th e show. T here was not a moment d u rin g the perform ance but w hat th rilled the sp ectators crow ding the gran d stan d an d bleachers. Cow hands ta k in g p a rt in the Round-Up a re not Dude ranch cow- boys b u t tru e w estern men of the ran g e who have experienced hard ran g e rid in g daily as seen in the events a t th is w estern show. The tru e A m erican, th e Indian, plays a colorful p a rt in th e reality of th e Round-U p in perform ing trib a l rites, ta k in g p a rt in th e W est w ard Ho p arad e and th e H appy Can yon show. Our Progress. U nheralded, and unnoticed by m any, th e re has been a steady and su b sta n tia l g ro w th of th is region. T his gro w th is a p p a re n t to an y eye th a t cares to look about. T h ere is a co n ten tm en t an d a b e tte r living condition. C o n ten tm en t on th e farm has been b ro u g h t ab o u t by a lack of de sire and o p p o rtu n ity to seek high wages in th e city, and by modern conditions in ru ra l life. B etter liv ing has been provided by b etter farm ing. W hile some may sm ile or resen t th e idea th a t farm in g is bet ter, these sam e people would find any o th e r occupation as d ifficu lt. T he av erag e person, now and then, hears of some o th e r individual who has made a g rea t success. Pos sibly so, b u t q u ite likely he had su f ficient funds to ca rry on an d was th e rig h t m an in th e r ig h t place, and fo rtu n e favored his advance. In d u stry and common sense ap plied here d u rin g th e la st few years app ear to have b ro u g h t ab o u t a fair income, a co n ten tm en t th a t does not give way to g reen er a ttra c tio n s over th e hill, and a stable condition th a t m eans increase of w ealth w hich is Portland'Pendleton Motor Freight, Ine. excelled by few o th e r localities, and is above th e n atio n al average. In stu d y in g th e m echanical con d itio n s w hich tend to create acci dents, in sp ite of a d riv e r’s ab ility , th e question of road visib ility from th e ca r is now receiving p a rtic u la r atte n tio n . It becomes a p p a re n t th a t in recent years, p ractical vision for th e driver, as well as occupants of th e car, has been im paired by the craze for stream -lin ed effect. A ccording to A rth u r W. Stevens, a member of th e Society of A utom o tive E ngineers, th e 1938 m otorist has a ran g e of forw ard, useful vis ion w hich is only o n e-eig h teen th of th a t of a m an w alk in g; and w hile cars are ab o u t 50 per cen t faste r th a n they w ere 17 years ago, th e d riv e r’s v isib ility has been reduced 3 8 per cent.
