Mr. W a tte n b u rg e r was killed Monday evenin g a t 7:00 o’clock when, in a tte m p tin g to pass a tru ck ju st east of H erm iston, his car stru ck the b u ttre ss of th e bridge, and plunged Into two feet of w ate r in th e “A ” line canal. W hen discovered W a tte n b u rg er was ly in g face down in the w ater a t th e side of th e car. T he tru ck , driven by Mr. K au f m an of Pendleton, an d th e W a tte n bu rg er car, w ere trav e lin g east, it was b ro u g h t o ut by Coroner A llen Folsom, who w as called to th e scene of th e accident. Mr. K aufm an re ported th a t he had noticed th e W a t te n b u rg er car a tte m p tin g to pass and th a t a sh o rt tim e la te r he w ent back and discovered th e w recked car. w hich was r ig h t side up b u t w hich had ev idently tu rn ed over be fore it reached th e canal. Only slig h t bruises w ere found on th e body of Mr. W a tte n b u rg e r and d eath was evidently from drow ning, Coroner Folsom stated. Mr. W a tte n b u rg e r has been in the sheep sh earin g business in Oregon and W ashington for 51 years. He is form erly of B u tter Creek and H ep pner, and had been m ak in g his home a t T alen t, Ore., and was in eastern Oregon for th e sh e arin g season. He is survived by two d au g h ters, M rs/ G ladys H am ilto n an d Mrs. M ary H ansen, of F o rt M cA rthur, San Pedro, Calif., an orphaned grand son, V ernon W a tten b u rg er, whom he reared as a son; th re e b rothers, W. J. W a tte n b u rg e r and A. E. W a tte n burger, Echo, an d F. W. W a tte n b u rg er, L akeport, Calif. The building now occupied has been purchased by the U m atilla C ooperative Cre’am ery and will be incorporated in th e ir expansion pro gram . C hurch b u ild in g dim ensions will be 32 feet by 60 feet, w ith a 10 foot w all and a seven foot full basem ent. T he en tra n c e w ill be on th e n o rth e a st corner of th e church. T he b u ild in g site was purchased from Mr. and Mrs. H. T. F raser. It is an ideal lo cation w ith a row of large trees in th e n o rth p a rk in g and along the w est and east approach.
