Like all o th e r strik e s the new s paper tleup in P o rtlan d affects many o th e r Innocent people. Coming now w hile unem ploym ent is high, it has added to those rolls over 10,000 for m erly paid w orkers, who are forced Into idleness. The employees at paper mills, and o th e r m a n u factu r ing plan ts, have been reduced. All th e news w riters, pressm en, circu lation m anagers, ad men and ca r riers are out of work. The g rea t stores in P o rtlan d find th e ir business g rea tly reduced thro u g h lack of ad v ertisin g medium. T his has been caused by a vote of 133, w ith 111 ag a in st the strik e called by the A m erican T ypographi cal Union, a m ajo rity of only 22, w ith the m ain contention over a rb i tra tio n as to w h eth e r the hours should be 7 or 7 per day. At th is ran g e we do not pretend to know why a lot of old employees of the three new spapers should take th e action they did. B ut if all eth er strik e s have no g re a te r grounds for action, we are not surprised a t the num ber of strik e s now going on th ro u g h o u t th e U nited States. We believe th a t th e trouble will soon be ironed out and likew ise we hope th a t some m eans may be arrived a t to bring about an am icable se ttle m ent of all strikes. The nation needs a g re a te r pur chasing power. T his m ust come thro u g h the g re a te r em ploym ent of labor and a g re a te r re su ltin g m ar ket for farm products. If strikes continue, it m ust re su lt in a sitdow n strik e of the farm ers— everybody strik e— u n til ad ju stm e n ts are made on a p a rity basis, by w hich all may receive a fa ir rew ard for th e ir la bors. CHRISTIAN SCSEH3E CHURCHES » T IF E ” was th e subject of the | j L e s s o n - Sermon i n a ll Churches of Christ, Scientist, on Sunday, Jan u ary 16. The Golden Text was, “ In the beginning was th e Word, and the W ord was with God, and th e W ord was God. . . . In him was life; and the life was th e light of m en” (John 1:1, 4). Among th e citations which com prised th e Lesson-Sermon was the following from th e Bible: “ For to be carnally minded is death ; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace” (Rom ans 8 :6 ). The Lesson-Sermon also includ ed th e following correlative pas sages from the C hristian Science textbook, "Science and H ealth with Key to the Scriptures by Mary B aker Eddy: “ The contin ual contem plation of existence as m aterial and corporeal— as begin ning and ending, and w ith birth, decay and dissolution as its com ponent stages— hides the tru e and sp iritu al Life, and causes our stan d ard to trail in the dust. If Life has any sta rtin g point w hat soever, then th e great I AM is a myth. If Life is God, as the Scrip tu re s imply, then Life is not em bryonic, it is Infinite” (p. 550). B-I*U PARISH.
