T he S tate of Oregon, cham bers of commerce, Bonneville enterprises, and oth er agencies spend much money an n u ally ad v e rtisin g the s ta te ’s resources and a ttra c tio n s, an d yet, someone w ants to build a h a lf m illion dollar highw ay thro u g h sagebrush d esert and leave off the m ain lin e of travel a h alf dozen ac tiv e com m unities, and m any miles of improved areas. A long the fifty m iles of proposed road from Pendleton to Boardm an, not one tow n or even a service s ta tion, exist. It would be a speedw ay th a t would save m otorists about six m inutes from P endleton to P ortland. If accidents occur in w in te r or the h ea t of sum m er, or in sw eeping and blin d in g w indstorm s, aid can come only from passing m otorists who w ill be im p a tie n t to get out of the Inclem encies as quickly as possible. Much more m ight be said ag a in st th is projected dream , and will be said if the project is attem pted and s ta te money is to be spent to the exclusion of more w orthy highw ay construction. No one seems to fath e r th e job of the new survey and ju st now It is said th a t it is only to keep a few s ta r engineers busy, pending o th e r w ork by th e state, w hich is good for th e boys, b ut how about w hat may follow?
