PIONEER COUNTY AGENTS HONORED Pioneers in county ag en t work in Oregon w ere honored a t th e an n u al all-agricultura"l sta ff conference a t Oregon S tate college in December, w hich observed the trip le an n iv er sary of th e founding of th e land g ra n t colleges 75 years ago, th e ex p erim en t sta tio n s 50 years ago, and of county a g e n t w ork 25 y ears ago. County ag en t work in Oregon be gan two years before th e Sm ith-L ev er act was passed by Congress in 1914, w hich established extension work on a cooperative basis, the rec ords show. A year earlier, in 1913, th e sta te of Oregon made a d efinite ap p ro p riatio n for extension work, w hile even before th a t th e b eginn ing of county agent work had been made. L. J, C hapin, a t present a farm er living n ear Salem, was th e first county ag en t in th e state, having been appointed Septem ber 7, 1912, and assigned to M arion county. He appeared on th e program of th e conference ju s t held and told of some of h is ea rly experiences as an extension ag en t. At th e tim e he was appointed the* work was sup ported jo in tly by th e U. S. d ep a rt m ent of ag ric u ltu re, th e Salem cham ber of commerce, and th e crop im provem ent com m ittee of the C hi cago hoard of trade. A fter Ja n u a ry 1, 1914, s ta te funds w ere used for the sup p o rt of th a t work. Appointed only one day la te r th an Chapin w as F. W. R ader, who be came county ag en t in W allow a county Septem ber 8, 1912. F unds for his su p p o rt w ere provided by th e U. S. d ep a rtm en t of a g ric u ltu re and the O.W.R. an d N. railro a d com pany. L ater R ader was assigned to county ag en t work in L ane bounty, b ut rem ained for only a sh o rt time. George Nelson of Colum bia coun ty has th e longest record am ong present Oregon co unty ag en ts for service in th is and o th e r sta te s.
