John Schm idt, who farm s on the U m atilla meadows w est of S tanfield, received an order from Oregon S ta te college for two carloads of a lfa lfa hay, w hich he shipped la st week. Schm idt has th e Grim m v arie ty which reg isters betw een 16 an d 17 per cent protein, u n d er te st a t the sta te college. T his p ro tein co n ten t has been co n sisten tly high for sev eral years, being tested each y ear a t the college laboratory. These boys were K enneth Bensel. son of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Bensel of H erm iston, and E ugene Rugg. son of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Rugg of U m atilla. They won th ird place in the sectional com peti tion on th e d em onstration of th e ad v antages of a modern safety bull pen in com petition w ith team s from 38 states. T he dem o n stratio n was sponsored by th e K raft-P h en ix Cheese C orpora tion in cooperation w ith th e a g ri c u ltu ra l extension service and th e n atio n al com m ittee on 4-H club w ork to prom ote in te re st in im prov ing d airy herds and methods. No alib is are being offered by th e boys on th e ir d em onstration b u t much has been learned th ro u g h the criticism by th e ju d g e a t th e show, who stated th e ir d em onstration sub ject m a tte r was good b ut th a t they would have stood m ore of a chance had th ey driv en a few nails and ac tu a lly b u ilt th e bull pen from raw m aterials. E ugene believes th e A yrshlres w ere th e m ost o u tsta n d in g in n u m ber a t th e d airy show , w ith H ol stein, Jersey, and Brown Swiss am ong th e o th e r breeds. Some of th e h ig h est producing cows in th e n a tion were exhibited. K enneth saw some of the fine Percherons a t th e a n n u a l horse show a t w hich 250 were judged. He also visited th e show w hen th e v arious gaited an d show horses perform ed. The boys w ere eager to tell of th e m any in te re stin g sig h ts seen on th e trip in w hich they visited tw elve sta te s and eig h t cap ital buildings. Of these b uildings th e cap ital a t L incoln, N ebraska, w as by far th e most m odern, said to be th e only cap ital b u lld in k w hich Is free- of debt. Of ail the colleges and u n iv ersi ties visited th e boys w ere most Im pressed by th e a g ric u ltu ra l col lege a t Ames, Iowa. The cam pus is the most b eau tifu l and the chim es rin g out over th e cam pus a t reg u la r Intervals d u rin g th e day. Here they discovered the use of “O n." as the ab b rev iatio n for th e S ta te of O re gon. M otoring th ro u g h N ebraska, K an sas and Colorado th e boys saw evi dence of th e m uch publicized d u st bowl. T hey traveled for m iles w ith o u t seeing vegetation grow ing. H ere th e d u st had been scraped from th e highw ay and stood th ree feet deep on e ith e r side of th e highw ay. E n th u siasm was expressed over th e v isit to th e m in t in Chicago w here th e boys saw how coins were made. A 93 p ercent silv er and seven p ercent nlckle com bination is h e a t ed to 27070 degrees fa h re n h e it in sm all vats and poured into molds six inches wide, 18 inches long an d two Inches deep. T his is cooled and w ashed, dried and sen t to a p res sin g room w here It goes th ro u g h a seven ton pressure machine. The m etal is th en weighed and cu t into strip s from w hich plugs the size of th e various coins are cut and sen t to the stan m p in g room. An a c cu rate acco u n t of w eights is kept, and a f te r com pletion the coins are placed In canvas bags and d istrib u ted . Among th e places visited were th e Mormon tab ern acle a t S alt Lake City, aleo th e u n iv ersity and cap ital, Brooklyn zoo, so ld ier’s field, y acht club, arm ory, n atio n al b ro ad castin g sta tio n a t Chicago, the glass fac tory a t N ew ark, Ohio, L incoln’s tomb a t S pringfield, Illinois, and th ree bronze statu es of Lincoln, one a t W ashington, D. Barlow, who has been v isitin g h er d a u g h te r Mrs. Lee Howell a t Hepp ner, re tu rn e d to H erm iston Sunday wth her son and his fam ily, and will visit here u n til Sunday when she will leave for her home in W ads w orth, K ansas. She w ill be accom panied by Mrs. B arlow 's m other, Mrs. A. M. Tillson who will go to K ansas City, about 35 miles from W adsw orth Mrs. Tillson lives w ith her husband and son on a stock ranch n ea r Meacham. Meetings Open November 7th.
