MESSAGE 4-H (LUBBERS WIN AGAINST COMPETITION U M A T IL L A C O U N TY WELL REPRESENTED It was a happy group of 4-H club d elegates who stepped from th e spe cial tra in a t S tanfield, F rid a y a f ternoon, a fte r a two w eeks’ v ac a tio n a t sum m er school in C orvallis. U m atilla county boys and girls m ade a good show ing in th e ju d g in g con test held a t sum m er school T h ursday, Ju n e 17th. F or th e first tim e in th e 23 y ears of sum m er school, a class of horses w ere in cluded in th e livestock ju d g in g con test. B ruce H olt of P endleton and Bob Jackson of H erm iston, tied for fifth place in th e livestock contest. T hree hun d red an d fifty boys e n te r ed th e contest. O tha W h itse tt placed six th from am ong 200 p a rtic ip a n ts in th e crops ju d g in g contest. G irls placing in th e home econ omics ju d g in g contest w ere F elicia Isaac, P ilo t Rock, who placed th ird in cooking, and E rm a R encken, F reew ater. M axine P reas, F re e w ate r, placed w ell up in th e ju d g ing of clothing. The first T uesday m orn in g over 1000 g irls g ath ered in th e w om en’s b u ild in g w here they w ere divided in to 50 sections in a record b re a k in g tim e of 15 m inutes, m aking it possible for th e g irls to a tte n d clas ses th e firs t m orning. T here w as a la rg e v arie ty of classes, b u t in th e opinion of m any of th e delegates one of the m ost in te re stin g w as th a t of boy and g irl rela tio n sh ip . M any p rom inent speakers ap p e ar ed on th e assem bly program s. Am ong these was B. F. Irvine, for 39 years a m em ber of th e S tate Board of H igher E du catio n , and edi to r of th e Oregon Jo u rn a l, who is th e only a d u lt in th e U nited S tates accepted as an h o norary m em ber of 4-H clubs. E very aftern o o n from 3 to 5 o’ clock, th e g irls sp e n t th e ir tim e a t 37 v arious activ ities. In th e evening boys an d g irls both atten d e d these activities. P rizes w ere given for high scores in a c tiv itie s on th e clos ing day. T here w ere 135 d elegates who m ade th e trip to N ew port on Sun day, b u t only tw o from U m atilla co u n ty . The day was sp en t in cycling on th e beach, sw im m ing and w ad ing, and a v isit to th e lighthouse.
