THANKSGIVING TURKEY POOL 98 PER CENT PRIME E. 0. T. G. ASSOCIATION HOLDS FIRST POOL. Large Percentage of Toms Expected at Next Shipment; High Grade Bird* Prevail. Thanksgiving turkeys have been moving out ot the Hermiston terri tory rapidly the past two weeks but the movement slackened after Mon day and Tuesday, November 18th and 19th, when the Eastern Oregon Turkey Growers’ association held ita first pool of the season. Birds going through this pool registered 98 par cent prime, out of a shipment of 3415 birds weighing 45,960 pound*. Only ten commercial birds were re ceived through the pool and those were sold to local trade. The two car shipment left Tues day night for Los Angeles. J. M. Cornutt of Riddle, Ore., act ed as official federal grader and stated that the quality of birds being marketed in this territory were among the highest. “This is due mainly,” he said, "because growers are learning how to select market able birds and how to prepare them for market to bring the highest grade.” Ideal weather prevailed during the finishing period and killing of mar ketable turkeys. Seventy per cent of the shipment through the pool were hen turkeys, with the toms finish ing out for market a little later. The December : pool will carry a great er per cent of toms, it is believed. A crew of between 20 and 24 was engaged for a day and a half to handle the pool. Growers brought their birds in to the pool according to schedule arranged through Assist ant County Agent Sawyer’s office, which enabled the crew to keep busy during the working hours. Birds bought by the Hermiston Produce company were said to total 9,000 pound*, the majority of which were prime birds. Other Independent dealers also shipped birds. Dr. A. W.
