THE HERMISTON HERALD, HERMISTON, OREGON. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 1935 N 1 FARM CO-OPERATIVE DIVISION | A UMATILLA MESSAGE SESSION HELD AT ECHO 74 CREDIT UNIONS CHARTERED IN AUGUST t 7 The Farm Credit Administration today (Sept. 4) announced that charters were granted to 74 new Federal credit unions in August, giving a total of 563 since the pass age last year of the act authorizing the organization of these coopera tive thrift and loan associations un der Federal charter. Quarterly reports from Federal credit unions which have been or ganized long enough to report op erations show that 340 of the new organizations already have over 46, 000 members as of June, 1935. At that time the oldest Federal credit unions had been in operation only nine months. Total savings of the 340 organizations as of June 30 a- mounted to 3717,000 and loans to members since organization, 3776. 000. The savings of both state and fed eral credit unions run into mill ions with an almost unbelievable re cord of scarcely any failures. Those who are veterans In the Cre dit Union moyement and who stand hgh in the Credit Union circles, freely predict that the credit union movement will eventually become the foundation of the nation’s fin ancial structure. Credit Unions were first organ ized in the United States among em ployees of industrial plants but it was not long until they had exten ded into almost every vocation, in cluding farming, and recently the community credit union, such as we now have here, has come into being. According to information received from the National Credit Union as sociation. credit unions should grew slowly and build solidly, rather than have a mushroon growth. There fore, aside from some personal sol icitation by officers of the organi zation, and explanatory talks to cer tain groups, there will be no mem bership campaigns in connection with the Hermiston Credit Union. M. G. Hedwall and R. G. Penney, who are both directors of the organ ization to anyone interested. The office of the manager is open at the Grange Co-operative from 2:00 until 4:00 p. m. on the twelfth and twenty-fifth of each month, for the transaction of business and as an in formation bureau. POTATO CONTROL PROGRAM WILL BE LAUNCHED SOON Immedate organization of the new potato production control plan a- dopted by Congress has been decid ed upon by the AAA, even though appropriation for its administration was held up in the failure of the fil ibuster deficiency bill, according to word received from Washington by the Oregon State College exten sion service. John B. Hutson, dir ector of the division of tobacco, sugar, rice and peanuts, will have charge of administration of the new act. The purpose of the new act, which passed Congress by a narrow margin, is to remove surplus and adjust acreage so as to increase in come of potato producers, says Mr. Hutson. Instead of being based on benefit payments and contracted acreage, the potato act proposes the levying of a heavy tax upon all ton nage sold in excess of the national sales allotment for potatoes. The federal men figure that the present parity price on potatoes would be approximately 90 cents a bushel, while the actual prevail ing market prices are only about 45 percent of that level. The allot ment year for potatoes begins Dec- ember 1, so that the plan will take effect December 1, of this year, al though it Is understood that all pot atoes produced prior to that are ex- empt from the control plan. Tarvola, Pendleton, Oregon. l-3tp Oregon homemakers who are members of home economics exten sion units are just a bit ahead of those in most other states in that they have an active part in decid ing just what project each group will carry each year, Mrs. Miriam Birdseye of Rogue River, president of the State Home Economics Ex tension council, told some 50 mem bers of that organization at its an nual summer meeting at Oregon State college August 5 and 6. She pointed out that instead of the college handing each county a cut and dried program each year, representatives of the local units meet with the state leaders and the county home demonstration agent and decide what sort of work in clothing, cookery, canning, parents’ education and other projects will best meet the needs of that group. The home economics extension staff then makes every effort to provide such a program. It was voted during the session that the State Home Extension council will offer a scholarship of 325 each year to a senior or gradu ate student in home economics at O.S.C. who wishes to better qualify herself for extension work. The fund is to be raised by voluntary contribution of Oregon homemak ers interested, and the scholarship will be awarded at the annual spring honor convocation as soon as sufficient money is available.
