Mrs. Lois Woods, graduate nurse at the Hermiston hospital spent the week end with friends in La Grande. Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Rohrman re turned from Portland Saturday after attending a Ford show there. The dreaded English spotted wilt has just been identified on plants brought to the station from a greenhouse along the Oregon coast. Dr. F. P. This disease is entirely distant from the various virus diseases com mon to the northwest at present, and much more serious, says Dr. Me Whorter. Leaves of affected plants become reddened, the plant itself is badly stunted, and fruit is borne sparsely if at all and is under-sired. In England and Australia the di sease is carried from plant to plant mostly by thrips. Any grower who suspects that they might have the disease in their plantings are re quested to send or take a sample to the state college for identification.
