HERMISTON, UMATILLA COUNTY. OREGON, THURSDAY, JULY 21, 1932
EX-SERVICE MAN FROM BONUS
ARMY VISITS HERMISTON
An unidentified ex-soldier, who
has been among the bonus seekers
In Washington, hopped from a
freight train early Monday morning
long enough to get a cup of coffee
at a cafe here. He said he had been
sent home on detail work and was ac
companied by two other buddies who
remained on the train until he
brought them some coffee, for which
he had the money to pay.
From the story told by this ex-
service man the conditions in the
camp of the bonus army are worse
than has been portrayed. For break-
fast they get one cup of coffee, a
slice of bread, and cereal without
sugar or cream. He says that a big
percentage of the army are unmar
ried men. He and his buddies left
Washington Friday, July 8, and
made good time until they reached
St. Couis. From then on the train
men were not so obliging as to tell
them which train to catch to make
the best time, he said.
