MADE FROM OREGON PRUNES. ♦ Oregon prune«, both the big tart Italians and the smaller, sweeter Pe- tites, are now available in abun dance and at very lov p-ices. They are whllesome, nutrious and econo mical food and deserve a prominent place In the diet of the average fa mily. says the school of home econo mics at Oregon State college. The greater part of the Oregon prune crop will be dried commercial ly, of course, but another large part will go into family fruit closets in the form of jams, jellies, conserves and canned fruit. Prunes are one of the easiest fruits to can, and when properly done, one of the best. Canning specialists at the college recommend the following method: Canned Prunes: Use Italian prunes that are thoroughly ripe. The stones may be left in or removed as desired. Pack the Jars with prunes and fill with syrup, made with 4 cups of sugar and 6 cups of water. Process the jars in boiling water for 30 min utes. Petites and other sweet varieties of prune.) are also good canned if some fruit acid, such as a slice of lemon or a little lemon juice is added to each jar. Of ail the dainties on the preserve shelf, perhaps none is more delicious than prune conserve. This is simply made as follows: Prune Conserve: Combine pounds of halved Italian prunes with the grated rind of I orange and the juice of 3. Measure, and heat slow ly to the boiling point, then add two-thirds of Its measure of sugar and cook 45 minutes. Add 2 cups of shredded walnuts and cook to the jelly test— 10 or IS minutes. Pour it into sterilized glasses, cool, and cover with paraffine. Other recipes for canning and pre serving Oregon prunes, for using them in pies, cakes, puddings and in various other ways may be obtained upon request from the school of home economics at Oregon State col lege. BORDEAUX MIXTURE AUTUMN GENEFAL CURE-ALL SPRAY. A spray rig filled with bordeaux mixture 4-4-50 is about the handiest thing around an Oregon fruit farm this time of the year in preventing trouble next season, says H. P. Haras, plant pathologist of the Ore gon Experiment station. Results of experiments at the station as well as experience of many growers show that bordeaux mixture is almost a general purpose spray for fall.. Probably of first importance right now is to get a coat o f bordeaux on apple trees in every section of the state where apple trees anthracnose Is present. During the dry summer this canker disease remains dormant. FAO» THREW but just as soon aa the tall rains start it becomes active and spreads to twigs and causes certain fruit rots unless the trees are protected with a spray. Thorough covering with well made bordeaux will give practically complete control. Next the peach trees can take a good dose of the bordeaux while the spray machine is warmed up. Peach blight and die-back are just ready to start their fall and winter attacks upon the twigs and buds of peach trees, and early fall rains aid this disease greatly in its campaign against next year's crop. A good dose of bordeaux now will prevent the sinking feeling from failure of leaves and blossoms to appear where they should next spring. Finally, before the spray pump is put away, a trip through the berry patch with It will prove profitable If the logans or other cane fruits have been troubled with leaf or cane spot. This group of diseases is com monly called anthracnose, but Pro fessor Barss gays It is not the real anthracnose but works the same way and Is controlled in the fame man ner, so good covering of bordeaux on the new leaves and canes will do the trick there as well. Home-made bordeaux mixture is Just as good as the commercial sorts if it is made properly, but that if ia important.
