FIGURES SHOW DECREASE As a result of the extenaion of the life span or average length of life and the reduction of mortality from disease, the number of orphaned children in this country has been ap preciably decreased in recent years, according to figures published by a large insurance company. In the productive age period, from twenty to forty-five years, tubercu losis constitutes the greatest cause of death, claiming 22 per cent or ap proximately one out of every five deaths occurring annually in this group, thus making tuberculosis one of the largest contributing causes of orphaned children. While the death rate has been reduced in Oregon and troughout the United States to half that of 20 years ago, over 600 per sons are still claimed by teuberculos- is each year in this state, according to the Oregon Tuberculosis associa tion. This is over one and one-half times as many deaths as were due to accidents handled by the state indus trial accident commission In the past 12 months as per figures contained in the commission's latest report. In 1921 two hundred and fifty-eight, or approximately 50 per cent of the deaths from tuberculosis, occurred be tween the age» of ..6 and 45 years. Organizations engaged In the cam paign against tuberculoais, Including the Oregon Tuberculosis association, urge parents to be on the alert to recognize the symptoms in them selves ae well as In other members of the household. The symptoms Include, among other conditions, con tinued loss of weight, persistent •oughs and colds, recurring after noon temperature rise, loss of appe tite and undue fatigue. The practice of having an annual health examination by the family physician for every member of the family is instrumental in discovering infecton in the early stages, when It is most curable, the association states. The use of the X-ray and sputum tests by competent chest men are also urged for those with definite symptoms. Recent medical publica tions on the subject have been re ceived by the local organization from the National Tuberculosis asso ciation, with which it is affiliated, and can be had free of charge by ap plying at Its office in the Fitzgerald building, Portland. The ossociatlou recently conducted a state-wide cam paign stressing the need of securing early medical attention for persons whi have been in close contact with tuberculosis Infection. Funds from the 1929 sale of tuberculosis Christ mas seals financed the project. Read the Advertisemets A R E A L B A R G A IN AT ‘4 4 0 <1. • . b .
