Per mits In the past have not been re quired for bonfires and burning of rubbish, but If the people continue to endanger the city as well as the property of Hermiston it may become neceeeary to secure a permit for burning within the city limits. The fire chief urgently asks the cooperation of all Hermiston cltisens to be careful at all times especially during the next 3 months, and any one reporting to me the danger of extra fire hazards will be appreciat ed. any fires could be avoided by seeing that your roofs and gutters are properly cleaned of accumulated rubbish. REGISTERED HOLSTEIN CALF Calf to be Presented to the Winner at the Umatilla Project Fair This Fall. Because ot his interest in 4-H club work and also in stimulating Inter est in Holstein cattle in this section. II. J. Bean, Holstein breeder of Echo has offered a registered Holstein heifer calf to the winning Holstein calf club member in western Uma tilla county. This award will be based on club work completed in cluding this year, and will be pre sented at the Umatilla Project Fair this fall. This announcement recently made by Mr. Bean will be of special inter est to Holstein calf club members at this time as the club work is just starting and it should stimulate mem bers to do even better work than in the past. In choosing the winner of this award members will be judged not alone from the standpoint of their club calf but such points as Interest n the work, leadership, herdsman- -ihlp, showmanship and record keep ing will be considered. The actual basis of award will be made in the future. The Hermiston Holstein calf club Is the only club of Its kind In west ern Umatilla county at this time. However, It Is possible that others may be organized. Rather attract ive records have been set up by mem bers of this club during the past 3 /ears. Each year over 5o per cent >f the calves In this club have been aken to the state fair and In every ase all the animals exhibited there rave placed In money classes. Last year Floyd McMullin was chosen as champion of the Holstein calf club members of the state. Club members In this district are '» be congratulated oq having such in opportunity as Mr. Bean has af- 'orded them to win a registered anl- nal from such a herd oa his. . In many cases many club members have been Interested In establishing a lalry herd for themselves through the Interest shown by community breeders. It ts surprising how rap- dly a boy or girl in club work can iccumulate a small herd, possibly all offspring tracing to one foundation inlmal, which has been won as a prize in club work.
