The h ig h school of H erm iston ap p ears in th is list, and it is g ra tify in g to know th a t th is Bchool is so honored, as m any tow ns in th e s ta te w ith much la rg e r p opula tio n s . do not ap p ear as h a v in g ac cred ited h ig h schools. A t th e a n n u a l m e etin g of th e N o rth w est associatio n of Secondary and H ig h er Schools, held in Spokane la s t m onth, five high schools w ere dropped from th e accred ited list and sev eral th a t applied w ere refused ad m ission because they could n o t come up to th e req u irem en ts. MARINE AID RILL IS APPROVED BY HOUSE W ashington, D. C.—W ithout a rec ord vote, the house passed th e $250,- 000,000 Jones-W hite m erchant m arine bill, which its supporters predict will resu lt in a g reat increase in ship building in th e U nited States. The m easure now goes to conference w ith th e senate. Its passage by con gress and approval by P resid en t Cool idge is believed certain. Not a single am endm ent undesired by th e house m erchant m arine com m ittee was m ade .to the bill in the house. The slight opposition to m inor featu res was sm othered in noisy shouts. D em ocrats joined with republicans in pushing the m easure through the house. Its o u tstanding provision is th at w hich increases from $125,000,000 to $250,000,000 th e shipping board’s loan fund, perm itting loans on ships built in A m erican yards for service under th e A m erican flag up to three-fourths of th e cost, at th e ra te of In terest paid by th e governm ent In its bond issues. T he persen t law perm its loans up to tw o-thirds of the cost of the ships, but the in terest is fixed a t 4% per cent for vessels for overseas trade. Those appearing included S enator C urtis of K ansas, Borah of Idaho, N orris of N ebraska and Goff of W est V irginia, republicans; W alsh of Mon tan a and George of Georgia, R epresen tativ e Hull of T ennessee and ex-Sen- a to r H itchcock of N ebraska, all demo crats. Borah said he had sp en t nothing; N orris listed his outlay at $6; Goff placed his at less than $100, which George said would m ore th an cover th e am ount he had put out; Hull told of sending $1000 to m anagers in his s ta te ; W alsh listed receipts a t $1075 and expenditures a t $1190.66, none of w hich he gave personally; H itchcock said the to tal disbursem ents on his behalf had been $1744.85, while Cur tis, testified th a t the to tal expendi tu re in his cam paign has been $11,- 468.67, w ith voluntary receipts of $11,- 685. FLOOD RELIEF BILL CONFERENCE HELD W ashington, D. C. President Cool idge invited house and senate confer ees on the M ississippi riv er flood con trol bill to visit the W hite House Mon day to discuss his differences with congress over several provisions ol the m easure. The senate and house conferees ac cepted the invitation. The develop- mt nt was regarded by supporters of the bill as indicating possibility that the president and congress may yet get together on the m easure. Mr. Coolidge has Insisted upon the states in th e flood at , as turning a larg er p art of the financial burden, and from the Inception of the flood control legislation in congress this has been one of the outstanding points In dispute. As finally approved by the confer ees, the measurfl authorizes a total appropriation of $225,000,000 for car rying out tho flood control _ project from the head of passes below New New O rleans to Cape G irardeau, Mis souri. I Its essential features include: Places the full burden of th e flood control plan on the federal govern m ent, except th a t the states or levee d istricts shall provide w ithout cost to the U nited S tates all rig h ts of way for levee foundations and levees on the main stem of the M ississippi river betw een Cape G irardeau and the head ol passes. Provides th a t no liability of any kind shall attach to or re s t upon the U nited S tates for any dam age from or by floods or flood w aters a t any place.
