A paragraph from one of Mr. Cohen’s characteristic signed stories of Thursday, December 15, was as follows: "First word that there may be something amiss in the turkey pool came in a message to the Journal from its North Powder correspond ent. This message said that it is understood that the (Christmas) pool will be disposed of at the best possible price and that the growers will not know what they are going to receive until after shipment Is made and returns secured." Hermiston turkey growers pooled their birds and sold them under con tract through the Idaho association in the Christmas pool. Mr. Cohen’s attempt to make' growers In other districts believe that the pool mem bers will not know, what they are to receive until later is laughable, if it were not so petty and so unworthy of a newspaper man who has beer in the work as long as Cohen. Hermiston growers brought in their birds for the Christmas pool, watched while the grading and "weighing was don« and then got their check on the spot. To aid Mr. Cohen even further, since It seems that no chance to discolor informa tion about the working of the poo! Is too small for him to use or be neath his alleged ethical- standards it Is interesting to know that the checks glen were all honored. Not only did Hermiston members of the pool get thetT checks, but they were able to cash them for real money. Mr. Cohen has incurred more 111 will for the Journal In the Hermiston district than seven cub reporters could have done. Commercial egg producers of thl* district have been “off" him and his misrepresentations for months. Now the turkey grow ers are added to the list. For Cohen to oppose co-operative marketing by farmers is his perfect right, but he should be smart enough ' in his opposition and cool enough not to forsake the truth in express ing his opposition. There are a lot of farmers in the Hermiston district who do not say of Cohen that he misrepresents. They refer to him as a liar in print. A MERRY CHRISTMAS To all its friedds in this good com munity the Herald extends its wishes for a Merry Christmas. A few more crimes as atrocious as the murder of the little Parker girl in California should be suffic ient to make some of the soft hcadfed sentimentalists realise that society’s duty to its own welfare demands punisment of criminals instead of making a hero of them.
