O re g o n HERMISTON IS KNOWN THAT SLACKER LIST Next to Bend, Oregon, Hermiston la perhaps the best advertised little city in the Pacific Northwest. As proof of this fact, we will tell an in cident that happened to a local bus iness man recently who was trans acting business In one of tha large cities on the coast. An Interesting citizen of the large city asked the local man the population of Hermis ton, and on being told that the cen sus man gave us 655, he gave a gasp and said that he thought at least Hermiston was 5,000, he heard so much about the place. Qur local booster then Informed the inquisitor that the city had in the neighborhood of 1,000, stating that the enumerator didn’t gather all the names in the city at the time of taking the census. It is a safe prediction that If Uncle San decides to take another census in 1925, Hermiston will show an easy 2,000 population, and this is a very conservative estimate. Hecmlston gets its best publicity from the crops that come from the project. Our alfalfa, fruit and hon ey do the trick. Hermiston’s alfalfa goes all over the Northwest, and is known as the best produced. The fruit is the same, and our honey has been stamped the best In the United States, even being superior to the world famous white clover honey of California. We can truthfully say that oui local citizens are altogether too mod est about talking up our country when away from home, and we wish they would call at the Hearld office when contemplating a trip outsldt the city, as we have a special bran of “PEP" tablets that will make yoi talk your head off about Ilermistoi and the Umatilla project. Including the names of valiant ex service men among the list of slack- ers leads unbiased people to suspect that the persons who kept the rec ords should head that list. The lists sent out by the war de partment have been found to be so unreliable the press of the country hesitates to publish them until the records of each man has been care fully -traced. If the records of the war depart ment and the draft board have been so loosely kept as to be largely un reliable, then the editorial fraternity Is quite justified In refusing to pub llsh the names of alleged draff evad ers until information can be supplied from a source that is dependable. It is better to let a hundred guilty men escape than to publicly humili ate one Innocent veteran.
